First, there's no indication that Hanley refused anything. All it says is that Hanley didn't like the idea of batting lower in the order. And, Edwin's tone (laughing about it) suggests that it wasn't a big deal. I'm sure if Edwin tried to put Hanley lower in the order and Hanley put up a fuss, we wouldn't be getting Edwin publicly laughing about the conversation.

Second, later in the article Hanley was quoted as saying: ‘I don’t want them to make a big deal about it because it’s not a big deal to me. I’m happy to do it for the team.”
