when they dont do it its like playing on a different playing field with the best teams in the league. By ignoring IFA, youre ignoring a completely different way to add talent to your system. So not only are you spending less money overall, youre completely neglecting one of the ways you actually can compete for less money. This and the draft are the 2 things i wanted to see exactly, so its really nice to see.

we''ve signed some guys over the years, but it's almost always low cost guys who we get "lucky" developing. Urena, Jarlin, Ozuna, etc. But we are almost NEVER in on the biggest names, and it really makes it that much harder to build a team on a budget like we need to do in order to be good.

One thing that has always boggled my mind that Loria never understood and that really cements to me just how stupid of a businessman Loria is baseball wise, is that he never understood the concept that having to sign non-star free agents is the least efficient way to build rosters and spend money. Striking gold on draft picks and international signings and getting them for 6 cost controlled team years, even if you strike out on a few guys here and there will pay dividends ten fold down the road, both in that you dont have to sign stupid free agents like Volquez, Ziegler, Tazawa, etc. for big money, and that you get really good players for cheap for 6 years.

Not sure Texas has tons of space left this year. They had 3.5 but signed one guy for 800K(2.7 left) then signed someone else. Plus like said he isn't even cleared yet. So he can make more if just waits till July 2

He is perfect for them. Shows they will spend some money, that there is a plan, a legitimate marquee bat prospect, longterm position of need, cuban. Every box is checked. A young more speed/less power/better defensive Curtis Granderson to match with Yelich and Sierra sounds hypothetically great to me on paper by 2020.

Combine that with a Realmuto extension, and you have some good press to talk about.

This really shouldn't be so hard for them.

            • From Barry Jackson, on Yelich:

              http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/sp...195576169.html

The Marlins have conveyed to Christian Yelich that they will listen to trade offers but have given him no assurances that they will fulfill his trade request, a source fully briefed on the situation said Thursday evening.

Yelich is displeased with the Marlins’ trading of Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna and Dee Gordon and is disinterested in being part of a long rebuilding program.

              ...

              ▪ A bunch of teams have given the Marlins proposals. One team that spoke to the Marlins said they were asking for way too much several weeks ago but now have become “more reasonable” in their demands.

              ▪ At this point, Yelich is strongly leaning toward attending FanFest, which is mandatory.

              ▪ One team said the Marlins, in Yelich talks, expressed a preference for more developed prospects who are in Double A or above. The Marlins want multiple prospects from a team’s list of Top 10 prospects.

              ▪ The Marlins initially tried to sell Yelich on the idea of staying and being a part of this rebuild but haven’t done so in several weeks. CEO Derek Jeter has said he has no need to reach out to Yelich.

              ▪ As Peter Gammons reported, a source briefed on the situation confirmed the Marlins asked the Braves for top outfield prospect Ronald Acuna in a package for Yelich, but the Braves said no.

              ...

              ▪ One team that spoke to the Marlins said Miami tried to get a third team involved because it liked that team’s prospects better. But a two-team trade seems more likely.
I don't like the bold parts.

So we're lowering our asking price just because?

And Jeter sees no need to reach out to Yelich? Yeah, the guy is unhappy, who cares! We don't need to talk to him!

Ya they have like 5 "offers" or teams they are talking to. The team that said wanted to much weeks ago were the Braves however they have talked more and came up with more reasonable which I have been trying to tell people that didn't include Acuna

More developed prospects like 3 pitchers in AA or above and 2 other prospects? Also should note its NOT that they want guys in AAA or AA but they want guys who will be ready by 2020. So just because a guy is in A Ball doesn't mean anything as long as they think he can move quick OR is a top talent

Cubs were the team that called and they didn't like the prospects and told them to find a 3 team deal. We like Almora and Happ but nothing else

They would love for Toronto or SD to outbid Atlanta but havent at this point. Also if Arizona loses JD don't be surprised to see them jump in on Yelich.

                  • I dont think Arizona has nearly enough in their system to get anywhere close to a good offer for Yelich.

Donovan Solano signed with the Dodgers today. So we can wrap up next season already and give them the trophy.

Gohara, Soroka, Anderson, Pache and Jackson. Let's go.

They don't but they have Brandon Drury,Zach Godley and Archie Bradley they could include along with prospects. Cubs have Happ,Almora and NOTHING in the minors

                      Gohara,Soroka,Anderson,Pache and Jackson??? Terrible deal

I thought that you just said the reports that they were sticking to requiring prospects like Acuna were true. If they aren't, they are making a mistake.

Another part that's interesting is that they plan to give Sierra every opportunity to win a starting job out of spring training.

How is it not "just because?" We don't need to trade him. If you don't meet our asking price, you don't get him. It's as simple as that. Nobody wants to pay our asking price, so we lower it to accommodate their offers? That's the definition of "just because."

I have to think the Sierra starting job out of spring training is lip service. Makes no sense for a variety of reasons. He's not particularly close to being ready and letting him start right away thereby losing a year of his team control makes no sense. Obviously they are in different classes as prospects, but the Cubs also said they were gonna give Kris Bryant a legit shot to make the team out of spring training, he lit up spring training, and they still sent him down for 2 weeks in what in retrospect was a clearly brilliant move (although it was obvious at the time).

That's not how negotiations work. We arent getting Acuna. Acuna has a legitimate shot to be a better player than Yelich as soon as this year. It's not lowering it just because, it's just how negotiations work. You aim for the moon to begin with and ultimately each side caves a little.

Not with Acuna. They asked for him over the Meetings and were told no but they are fine with that because Atlanta has so much good stuff. Now with Washington/Robles and Toronto/Vlad Jr this is still true. If Washington wants Yelich or JT the offer starts with Robles

Same with White Sox. They asked for Moncada and were told NO however CWS has so much stuff they were fine with that however CWS weren't interested in Kopech,Robert and more
