  • The Blue Jays just signed Steve Pearce to a 2-year, $12.5M contract. I wouldn't have minded signing him as a platoon mate with Bour.

Absolutely. They're only going after a premier reliever because the starting pitching options are weak and this is the season they need to compete.

      • Apparently Loria is at the Winter Meetings. I don't know if it's true or not, but listening to MLB Network Radio, Jim Bowden was saying the last time Loria was at the meetings was 2012 when we went crazy on spending.....makes me wonder if we could do it again and make multiple surprising signings.

Not only is he at them(Well sitting in a suite all day) but we also have offers out to atleast 5 guys

Offers we have out(Money could be more but atleast this)

          Melancon(4/60 No Comp)
          Jensen(5/80 Cost 1st)
          Chapman(5/80-will increase No Comp)
          Hammel and Fister(2/22)
          Travis Wood(3/27)

We are also looking at backup C(Sorry Telis fans) and talking trades with KC(Davis/Dyston)/Houston(Fires/McHugh). They are looking at SP/RP on the cheap-Wilson,Holland plus a power bat.

Rumors are Loria is going for it this year and is willing to spend 100 million on FA. Just a rumor but could be interesting few days for us

          • lol @ giving up the 14th pick for a closer where we already have at least 2 guys who could be above average closers, if not 3 if you include moving Koehler to the bullpen where he should have been for a while now.

            • Also they are telling teams Ozuna is off limits.

As for "trade" talk we have some guys that teams like-Castillo,Jarlin Garcia,Urena,Steckenrider,DD. Houston also likes some of our young Rookie Ball arms(Frances Martes all over again). Not a big market but Hech is also out there-like said a few times. Mattingly prefers Rojas and Jeff prefers cheap

Blow the bank and sign them all. We all know he's either going to sell or blow the team up next year anyway

Here is the thing about the 14th pick-u aren't getting a guy who can help the team this year or next plus it will cost 2.5 million. The thought is get Jensen and u got a super pen. They actually want Chapman BUT are afraid NYY will beat the offer which is why they are shooting for Jensen or Melancon. Sign 1 quick and move on instead of getting into a war with NYY for Chapman and miss out on all 3

If u havent been able to tell Jeff don't care about the farm system plus they still have the competitive balance which means we will probably get a pick in the 30's(Unless we trade that too)

                  • How many times have we hosted the All Star Game (hint: never). The time is now for Jeffrey Cakes.

Sign Jansen and Hammel and that gets us another 5 (maybe 6) wins next year. Then all we need is for Giancarlo to put up a WAR he is capable of and we go to the playoffs in 2017.

Stanton can easily give us an additional 2-4 wins next year.

That is absolutely horrific long term strategy. What is the point of any first round pick in baseball with that rationale. That would be one of the most short sighted moves this team has ever made acknowledging their history of incredibly short sighted moves.

                      • well, he's selling the team so why does he care about long-term strategy

Can only hope!! Honestly ill take a hedge fund owning this team-sit in an office, write checks and hire actual baseball guys to run the team

We should know by next week tho if Jeff is or isnt tho-when the contract details start coming out

                          - - - - - - - - - -

Long term?? Jeff could care less about long term. He wants to win NOW. What good is the #14 pick going to do him in the next 5 years??

I agree with u-I think building thru the draft and IFA is the way to go but until we get a new owner it won't happen. He doesn't see the value in spending big cash and developing guy when he can just trade for OR sign them when a FA. Example is Moncada-he wanted him but NOT for 60 million so the "plan" was try and get him for Jose eventually

Completely agree.....if there's one thing Loria likes besides money is to make himself look good when he's got the spotlight on him (see 2012 offseason).

Loria has shown that he has no long term vision for the team regardless of whether he's selling the team or not.......the only long term vision he has for the team is to make money off of it.

                            • Feels like Jansen is going to sign here. Melancon close with the Giants; big-market teams interested in closers prefer to keep their 1st round pick. The Marlins seemingly don't care about the 1st rounder (quite frankly, I don't either).

                                Melancon to SF

Jeff wants Chapman the issue is feeling around baseball is LA or NYY will blow the offer out of the water tho and then they will miss out on Jensen too

Likely sign Jensen and let NYY/LA fight over Chapman
