So yeah, I'm hoping the report of Urena being called up as our 5th starter was premature.

That's what I'm saying. Or since Kelly has only played 1st base since he's been up, that Scruggs guy is a first baseman with a .900+ OPS.

i can only assume that some of these guys they don't want to put on the 40. i don't know what the longer term ramifications of doing that are.

They had to put Don Kelly on the 40 to call him up. Not like Andino or this Scruggs guy are prospects.

I think the front office understands they are gone have to acquire at least 1-2 bench guys for the stretch run. Similar to the mets last year bringing in guys like Kelly Johnson and others. Nobody thats gonna cost anything serious but people that are you know, not Don Kelly or Cole Gillispie.

Improving the bench should not be a huge priority considering the state of our system. Chris Johnson has been a disappointment for the most part, and if you could find a legitimate lefty-masher to take his role, that'd be worthwhile. With our 4-man outfield, who ever is in Gillespie's role is not going to see much PT. Ideally you'd like an Amezaga type who can play every position, with some speed, but not sure how many of those are available who don't completely suck. (Boner) Kelly will be gone when Bour gets back, and also Gillespie's spot will be gone too pretty soon with Gordon's imminent return.

improving the bench should absolutely be the priority, or at the very least just looking for a bat off the bench should be a priority. Granted its not the biggest thing we need but 2 more actual major leaguers that will cost nothing off the bench would be a huge thing for this team considering we're giving key AB's to guys like Johnson, Kelly, Gillispie, Rojas (who has been a really nice guy off the bench), and Mathis.

And typically these guys don't cost much of anything prospect wise.

If you're getting a player that will actually help you. (Lefty-Masher) then it will cost you a decent prospect. Upgrading Johnson would be a good idea, I agree, but a bench of Ichiro, Johnson, Rojas, Dietrich, and Mathis is not terrible. (well Mathis is terrible, but he's not going anywhere)

you're actually right a bench like that is not terrible at all. But with Dietrich starting or if, say Hech goes to the bench, it goes back to bad. I think after looking at that bench there we only really could use 1 more really nice bat off the bench, and i expect them to get 1 before the deadline.
