New to the forum but the front office is gonna fail this team yet again. They did a solid job building the main components of the team but the surrounding pieces and bullpen construction has been god awful and is gonna be the reason why we are gonna fall behind the mets and pirates and cards in the wild card race.

The bullpen is so easy to fix and they just refuse to put any money into the pen this offseason. The fact that Mike Dunn coming off his injury is gonna be a huge addition is incredibly scary. Signing one guy to a deal for a few million to stabilize the middle relievers/set up man was so obviously necessary this offseason and they refuse to spend money. Instead we signed Craig Breslow to be our LOOGY and they clearly never checked his splits because lefties hit him just as well as righties have in his last 3 year splits. nothing in his career showed that he could be a loogy, but we weren't gonna spend any money. Narveson had no business being in a big league bullpen but because they foolishly thought small sample sizes from Ellington and Barraclaugh were representative of what they are, they put too much stock into them being good and after they stunk up spring training we had to blow multiple games in the beginning of the year because we were throwing retreads out there. And I'm not sure why Wittgren is being used like he is the last guy in the bullpen, he has been very good and has looked to be major league ready for like 2-3 years at this point. He is going to be our next Ramos if you look at both of their minor league numbers comparatively. McGowan and Edwin Jackson have no place in the majors. Koehler is so obviously a great bullpen arm as well.

But the bullpen is nothing compared to the disgrace that is the front office construction of our bench. How many guys are out there every offseason that are capable of being 4th outfielders? Yet we're content with Ichiro yet again being that guy for us? He's been good so far this year but if you expect that to continue you're going to be disappointed. Telis is the deserving backup catcher and yet we continue to have Mathis on this team simply because the pitchers like throwing to him. I understand he's great defensively but when you have Telis hitting over .350 and our bench being completely awful, we gotta do something. One good game of defense a week is not worth having him on the team, especially when anything he brings defensively is overwhelmed by his complete lack of ability to hit. Put 5 million into the bench for god sakes, we are 28th in payroll ahead of only the rays and the rebuilding Brewers. One of the reason we have been so completely terrible for 13 straight years now is the complete refusal to put any money into depth. ITs happened how many years in a row now? The best teams in the league have injuries too, they just know how to build teams behind their star players.

I love this team but man, the lack of money spent compared to other teams in the majors when we have a brand new stadium that was supposed to fix this issue can be so frustrating to watch. Just 10 million on a couple of bench guys and a few bullpen arms would do wonders not only for the major league team, but for when guys inevitably go down and we are bringing up Narveson, McGowan, and Edwin Jackson. God forbid you spend 10 million more to get all the way up to 82 million and still stay 28th in payroll. All star game next year can't come soon enough.

Hey Fish16 welcome to the board.

      Ichiro is OPS'ing .816.

You can't bitch about a 4th outfielder and say "we'll yeah he's been good for 2 months but he's gonna suck and you heard it hear first".

I also think bitching about our bullpen is weird timing.

Conley got crushed last night and the defense was horrible.

Better timed bitching would be bitching about defense and how the Marlins only managed to score 2 runs vs the Braves.

I agree it's not a good time to be mad about those things specifically after last night I was just saying in general it's frustrating to lose games like that because our lineup looks worse than theirs just because Stanton and Yelich are out. Obviously we are not going to be nearly as intimidating with them not in the lineup but this bench is complete dog shit and it was obvious all offseason. Having a bench this bad is very avoidable with major league level payroll. We could spend 14 million more and still be 28th in payroll. These lineups we've thrown out there the last few days have been embarrassing.

Last night was obviously hard to watch but its just something that happens a couple times in a 162 game season. It's hard to be mad at Prado when he is sure handed defensively and the other was just a miscommunication that wouldn't usually happen with Yelich out there.

Let's not forget they let Brad Hand go so that they could pay Breslow and Naverson 3m combined.

Hand had a .400 OPS against lefties. The teams lefties have nearly a 900 OPS against LHB.
          LOL

But seriously, look at breslow's numbers vs lefties. Nothing showed he could be a lefty specialist.

This year lefties had an ops over .900. Last year in 88 AB's lefties hit .295/.351/.455/.805. The year before in 103 ab's .291/.381/.456/.838. The year before that in 95 ab's .253/.304/.400/.704. Relying on him this year to be a lefty specialist blew a few games in April.

No mention of the starting pitching?

The bullpen looks fine and the offense looks good enough when healthy. The starting pitching, on the other hand, looks like it could be one of the worst in the big leagues at this point. That's not even taking into account a potential shutdown of Jose later in the year.

Our "#2" has a 4.61 ERA, our "#3" has a 1.48 WHIP, and then we have the awesome Koehler/Nicolino combo at the backend. With no forseeable help on the way in the minor leagues. That is by far the team's biggest problem.

The bullpen looked like a problem coming into the year, but with the emergence of Phelps and Barraclough, it looks just fine to me. I really don't care if we don't have a lefty in it.

Well think the plan was Dunn and Breslow as the LOOGY.Mattingly said he wanted it like that

As for Ichiro,he is exactly what a 4th OF should be. Can't say one bad thing about the guy. Yep this is from a guy who isn't even a fan of him

Stanton and Yelich out again. Another loss to the Braves coming!!!

Just put Stanton on the DL and get it over with.

Why? It's not like we have some stud waiting in AAA or AA. Let's 15 Day Stanton,DFA a project arm(Hall) and add Don Kelly/Scruggs/Destin Hood or Galloway? I wouldnt give any of them a roster spot.

Only 1 position player on the 40 Man-Telis and there are 2 or 3 interesting names in DFA limbo that they prolly are looking at.

Why are we never interested in international FA's, is it really only money?

Because it costs money to scout and sign them. Instead of signing 1 or 2 really good IFA for our cap pool,we sign 10 for 1 million/leave 3 million in Jeff's pocket and cross our fingers. Some teams invest big in IFA-Washington/Texas/St Louis/LAD/NYY. They have complex that look like college campuses for the kids, they let them train.go to school and all then when they turn 16 sign them

It's even easier now to sign guys and we have zero interest-NONE of the big name clubs can sign guys this year for over 300K so the IFA market will be mostly Atlanta,Milwaukee,Cincy,SD

The draft is the same way for us,MLB tells teams the MAX they can spend and about 28 teams try to spend that or more if they can. Why? Because talent costs money. Now on the other hand u can draft boom or bust types for way less and save some more cash. This is what we do.

                          - - - - - - - - - -

Ozuna signed for $50,000. Urena signed for $52,000

The way Jeff sees it is he would rather sign alot of guys cheap and hope that 1 or 2 make the Majors than spend 4.25mil on Michael Ynoa(signed same year as Ozuna) and wasted 4.25 mil that he doesn't have(according to him). Its not a bad idea but would be nice to see them invest more than what they do to add some talent especially since teams have a cap on what they can spend

The really frustrating part tho is when u hear some of these guys wanna play for us and we lowball the crap out of them. When we had Cabrera, heard stories of kids from Venezuela who wanted to play for us but we never offered a contract or the offer was like $100,000 and other teams were offering $500,000-1 million. I think the only one we ever got was SS Jose Torres

We have 3 minor leaguers in our bullpen. McGowan, Jackson, and Urena need to go.

As much as I'm dying for a playoff team, this team just isn't one. Compared to the Cards, Pirates, and Mets, we are nowhere close to what we need to be to be a wild card. And unless this team opens its pockets in the offseason we won't be for a while considering our farm system. Ideally we would have 3 actual major leaguers on our bench, 3 bullpen arms rather than Jackson, Urena, and McGowan, and Koehler as a back end bullpen arm like its been obvious he's needed to be for about 3 years.

I would love to see a trade to shake up this team but we have literally nothing attractive as a major trade piece in our farm system.

Bench has actually been pretty good especially if you take into consideration that Dietrich was on the bench to start the year.
