No his agent needs to explain that even if it is preventing his own bigger payday
man, this is stupid. whether or not to take a buyout is up to each individual player and is a decision pitting risk vs. reward. boras can have a preference for whatever he wants and advise his clients in that regard based on his experience. there are lots of boras clients who have gotten mega shitload deals by waiting for free agency.

do you really think these players, like marcell ozuna, don't understand that there's a risk/reward decision here? players need an agent to explain to them that hey, this 6 yr/$50M deal will provide financial security for life, but if you don't take it and keep kicking ass we can make way more money in the near future?

if you really think the players don't understand anything, and especially in this instance since you mentioned ozuna, then i bet you can't wait until cowherd is back on the air.

I don't know what cowherd is. But most professional athletes are not well versed in business or understand the risk/reward decision as well as they should. And to think an agent doesn't spin a buyout deal to favor what they would prefer is naive. Most language is biased for someones self interest. When an agent is explaining terms of a buyout deal, and saying but we could wait and get get a a 10/300 type deal, it's in his self interest to do this. A guy like Boras doesn't care if his client fails because he's got a bunch of others that have succeeded and were offered those big free agent contracts. A player basically needs an agent to negotiate with the club and then a risk assessment consultant to explain the pros/cons of each deal.

no. it is in an agent's best interest for his client to maximize his earnings. it is also in a player's best interest to maximize his earnings.

any idiot can understand that there is a trade-off between early safety and security with a buyout and holding out for a bigger deal sooner without that safety net. you are implying that the average player is a dumb as a pile of bricks. this is common sense. you don't have to well versed in business at all. you have to be greater than mentally retarded, and that's about it.

the interests are aligned. if an agent and player decide to wait for free agency and then his career implodes, the agent loses out on his fees and eats shit right with the player.

The agent doesn't have the same risk. He represents multiple clients. A player has to rely on himself. Most financial managers would tell you to take that guaranteed deal or negotiate it to be less years and still have time to get a big contract. If you have minimal earning potential outside of baseball and you've got a 50+ million buyout 5+ years, you should take it if you've only seen a signing bonus and league minimum salaries. Most professional athletes have no idea how to manage money and that's why you hear some going bankrupt despite earning millions.

            • Clayton Kershaw said the other day he preferred a short-term deal in his extension, rather than the 10/$300,000,000 guarantee the Dodgers offered. Everyone has different motivations.

blowing money on stupid shit is not the same thing as not making money.

and this one size fits all manner of approaching player contracts is stupid bullshit. not everyone wants the safety net. some do. the players are not mentally incapable. they know what they're doing.

Yeah but it isn't in the best interest of an agent to explain a players options properly whereas it is in the best interest for a player to understand them thoroughly. And when considering future planning is an area most people aren't capable of doing effectively it's easy to assume it's not something most athletes understand.

                    this seems like nonsense.

it's in an agent's best interest to get the most money possible for his client

Because that maximizes his own earning. So taking arbitration risk every year and then opting for free agency maximizes the potential earning.

                      • Which is what it does for a player. Some players will want to bet on their upside. Some won't.

Elvis Andrus bought out his final two abritration years as a Boras client. Carlos Gonzalez did too. He's not making the decision for them.

The idea that players are incapable of understanding risk/reward decisions is super patronizing.

Andrus deal is phenomenally a bad deal, so I would chalk that one up to the Rangers idiocy.

But I agree, the players get it and some will bank on health and success.

They can understand the decisions, but an agent isn't an unbiased opinion as they're earning is also tied to the players except they are not risking their future of not flipping burgers when a buyout is passed on.

Also, I'm not talking about race at all. Athletes in general are not scoring high on IQ tests. Humans in general can't handle future planning properly. In general, they'll take a free meal today over 10 in a year. It's just how we make decisions. Agents aren't financial planners for athletes and a good agent wouldn't advise a financial planner that would contradict his own recommendations.
