    Junior

Squier has been a member of Hawaii’s rotation since arriving on campus as a freshman. He finished this spring strong, throwing a complete game in his final start of the season. Squier’s fastball sits around 90 mph, but scouts are still hopeful that he might be able to fill out his lanky frame and add more velocity. His slider is his best pitch, though it gets slurvy at times. He has a solid changeup, giving him a full arsenal. He doesn’t have overpowering stuff and has to be fine with his command to succeed. Squier has the tools necessary to be a starter in the Major Leagues or a team could put him in the bullpen, where he has the potential to move quickly.

College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the season with our 2014 Top 100 College Baseball Players. Today, we continue the countdown at number 35 with Hawaii left-handed pitcher Scott Squier. The Phoenix, Arizona native attended Greenway High School where he earned Arizona all-state honors in ‘10 and ‘11 while being named to all-Region team in in ‘10 and ‘11 and 2011 league Pitcher of the Year.

As a freshman in 2012, he started 14 games on the mound with one relief appearance for 64.1 innings with a record of 3-4 with 55 strikeouts and posting a 2.72 ERA.

His sophomore season saw him struggle with results 0-6 but had a strong ERA of 3.44 in eleven appearances including eight starts while striking out 46 batters in 55.0 innings. Some of this best performances came against some top notch teams including striking out a career-high nine batters in 7.0 innings of scoreless work against No. 10 Rice (Feb. 22) allowing just four hits and walking just one batter. He also pitched a career-high nine innings allowing just one run with six strikeouts versus Gonzaga (Mar. 11) but did not factor in the decision as his offense didn’t support him in the 12-inning loss.

Scott spent the summer of 2013 in the NECBL with the North Adams Steeplecats where he went 4-5 with a 2.70 ERA in ten starts while striking out 70 batters in 69 innings pitched. He made an appearance in the NECBL All-Star Game where he pitched an inning striking out two batters.

A coach in the NECBL gave us the following scouting report on Squier:

Tall frame, 3/4 arm slot, 89-93, will be higher when he fills out. Slider has bite that creates swing and miss a lot. Change up needs work but should develop. High ceiling

The first two University of Hawaii players chosen came in back-to-back picks in the 16th round when the Miami Marlins took left-hander Scott Squier No. 467 overall and the Chicago White Sox took right-hander Matt Cooper at No. 468.

Squier, who has a year of eligibility remaining, went 5-5 with a 3.48 ERA and 81 strikeouts in 88 innings with three complete games.
