Marshall junior outfielder Corey Bird was selected with the 203rd pick in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Miami Marlins on Friday afternoon.
A native of Elkview, W.Va., Bird becomes the third highest draft selection in school history, and the first draft pick for the Thundering Herd since Aaron Blair and Isaac Ballou in 2013. Bird joins Blair (2013, first round, 36th overall), Joe Goddard (1971, eighth round, 175th overall) and Jeff Montgomery (1983, ninth round, 212th overall) as the fourth Herd play to be drafted in the first 10 rounds.

“I’m very thankful for all the opportunities that Marshall University and Coach Waggoner have given me,” Bird said. “I want to thank God and give all the credit to him. I also want to thank Coach Waggoner for not passing up on me and giving me an opportunity of a lifetime to compete at the Division I level and play in such a competitive conference. None of this would be possible without all of my teammates for having my back. I’m very thankful for all of them and I’m so proud of how great of a season we had this year.”

Bird is the 19th draft selection under Head Coach Jeff Waggoner since taking over the Herd program in the 2007 season.

“Congratulations to Corey for being selected in the draft,” Waggoner said. “I’m very excited for him. He has a great opportunity either way, whether he decides to sign with the Marlins or chooses to come back to Marshall for his senior year.”

In three seasons with the Herd, Bird has put together an impressive career in which he ranks in the top 10 of two statistical categories. His 59 career stolen bases and 183 hits rank tied for fourth and 10th in Marshall history, respectively. Bird holds a .300 career batting average with 20 extra base hits and 57 RBIs.

A second team All-Conference USA selection this past season, Bird played in all 55 games and owned a .300 batting average, with 69 hits, 44 runs scored and 22 RBIs. The speedy outfielder was a terror on the basepaths with a C-USA high 34 stolen bases, third most in a single season at Marshall. Bird held a 1.000 fielding percentage with 168 putouts.

Bird was named to the C-USA All-Tournament team after batting .421 (8-for-19) with two RBIs in four games. He had one stolen base and 13 putouts.
