  • Chad James, SP

With fewer than two weeks to go before the First-Year Player Draft signing deadline, there are only 12 first-round picks who have signed with their respective teams. That leaves 20 unsigned picks with roughly 12 days to go before the clock on signing these highly touted prospects expires. It doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that those figures add up to an exciting and nail-biting conclusion to the Draft signing period.

It officially ends at the end of the day on Monday, Aug. 17 -- technically, according to the Commissioner's Office, at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 18 -- and if the brief history of the August signing deadline is any indication, many of these deals won't come until the final minutes -- even seconds -- as the clock strikes midnight. If that's the case, the Commissioner's Office will have even more paperwork to do than in year's past.

    ...

    18. Chad James, Florida Marlins: There's been little to nothing reported on this front for some time, but it might come down to that suggested 10 percent slot cut. His father, Duane, told the Daily Oklahoman in mid-July, "What he's asking is within 10 percent of what was paid to that pick last year. His is in line with what's there."

          Born: 01/23/1991
          Birthplace: Yukon, OK
          Height: 6' 3"
          Weight: 190
          Bats: L
          Throws: L

Selected by the Marlins in the first round (18th overall) of the 2009 First Year Player Draft. Signed August 15th, 2009.
          --------------------
James, 18, a left-hander from Yukon High School in Oklahoma, was the 18th overall pick. He has agreed to a contract worth $1.7 million. James completed his physical in Florida and, according to his representative, Rob Martin, he will sign on Monday in Oklahoma City.

James has drawn comparisons to Boston's Jon Lester. He's 6-foot-4 and has had his fastball clocked in the 93-94 mph range. A good athlete, he hit in the middle of the order on his high school team.

In preparing for his professional career, James has been working on his changeup. As a senior at Yukon, he was 8-2 with a 1.23 ERA. In 63 1/3 innings, he allowed nine runs, striking out 100 and walking 33.

Before being picked by Florida, James committed to Oklahoma State. Now, he will be joining the Marlins system and within a few days be back in Florida to begin working out at the team's complex in Jupiter.

The Marlins have signed first round pick Chad James, a right-hander out of Yukon (Okla.) High School. James agreed to a $1.7 million signing bonus and has passed a physical. The agreement was first reported by Baseball America.

"He did come down off his asking price at the last minute because of the Marlins' proficiency for developing high school pitchers," said Rob Martin, of Icon Sports, James' advisor. "He did not think he would end up coming down off his asking price."

James was believed to have been seeking $1.75 million. He had signed a letter of intent to attend Oklahoma State. According to Baseball America, the estimated slot bonus at James' spot was $1.422 million.

Not a fan of his, not a fan of paying slightly over slot for him.

              Prove me wrong, kid!
              --------------------
And also, James is a lefty, not a righty like the thing MBA posted says.

James with another 'meh' start, but Todd still gon eat a frog.

                          4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 WP, 1 HR.

But a nice sign that he continued from his previous outing:

                          7 GO, 2 FO.

That's 14 GO, 4 FO on the season.
