  • Rays @ Marlins: 5/20/11 - 7:10 PM

Tonight, fella by the name of Sanchez is taking the hill for the Fish. He's been pretty good this year, to the tune of 3-1 and a 2.90 ERA. I'm told you don't use ERA to evaluate a pitcher, but that's a pretty good number right there.

They're going against a guy named Sonnanstine, I don't care how he's pitched this year.

If you want to watch the game, it's on FSN in that high-definition thingy that lets you see everything. It's also on 790, but our guys don't tell you the score a whole lot. You know what, it's Friday, go see the game.

The guy named Sonnanstine has pitched pretty well this year and I have heard of him, so we have a chance.

Not telling the score in 2011 is not as big of a deal as it was 5,10,15 years ago.

        Smartphones.

        Just sayin.

I disagree entirely. In 2011 it's a bigger deal than it was, say 20 years ago, as fans expect it. We've become accustomed to having access to the score at all times on television and the radio guys need to adapt.

I don't see how Felo can know that fans want to know the score and DVH doesn't.
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.

I may have to challenge you to a duel because I could not disagree with this statement more.

20 years ago, fans did not have smartphones which could give them the score of a game in 3 seconds with the touch of a finger.

The only way a fan knew the score of a game BS (Before Smartphones) was if the announcer let them know. Now, that is simply not the case.

I don't think that the fundamentals of the broadcaster's job has been changed by personal add-ons. Their job is to report on the game in front of them for the listener. What did change this dynamic was the difference in presentation on TV, since radio and television fall into the same category of information. On TV, we've become used to having the score at our disposal at all times. Just as it's the announcer's job to report on the correct call on a close play, or diagram where a pitch was, it's on them to give the score in a timely fashion.

If I'm listening to the game primarily on the radio, I'm more than likely driving. Should I have my smart phone out and be looking at it constantly to know the score rather than focus on the road?

Are you saying DVH is a threat to public safety?

I don't agree with anything you're saying except the driving part. That is a very good point.

The contrast in hair styles between the Rays guys is hilarious. You have one guy with a curly afro style and the other is bald.

Wow, the Rays have a ton of lefties with those switch hitters. I never realized that.
