JACKSONVILLE, FLA — Former UNC Asheville outfielder Kevin Mattison has been named to the Southern League All-Star team.

Mattison, who plays for the Florida Marlins’ Double-A affiliate in Jacksonville, Fla., will participate in the league’s All-Star Game on June 21 at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tenn.

Mattison leads the Southern League in stolen bases with 18 is currently batting .327 with eight triples and 26 RBIs.

He played for the Bulldogs from 2005-08. Mattison hit .286 with a career-high 11 home runs as a lead-off hitter in 2008. He is the school's and Big South's all-time leader in career triples (23) and holds Asheville’s career record for runs scored (192).

Kevin Mattison is one of the top outfielders in the Miami Marlins organization. He played his 2012 season at the Triple-A level with the New Orleans Zephyrs and is coming off a 2011 Arizona Fall League in which he won the Dernell Stenson Sportsmanship Award. He also got some time with the Marlins this season.

Mattison is ranked No. 15 in the Marlins organization by MLB.com and No. 27 by Baseball America.

In 2012 with the Zephyrs, Mattison played in 121 games and recording 116 hits out of 482 at-bats. He batted .241/.310/.394/.704 with 13 home runs and 41 RBI. Not great numbers but he has been in the farm system for a long time. Mattison also recorded 23 doubles on the year. The bad thing is that he struck out 145 times which is almost like Mark Reynolds status in the minors.

Mattison has a potential of being a lead off hitting in the major leagues due to his incredible quickness, which also increases his value in the outfield. He stole 26 bases for the Zephyrs in 2012.

Another turnoff about Mattison is that he is losing the title of prospect soon since he is 26-years-old. If he does not make an MLB team as a lead off hitter he could wind up as being a nice tool off the bench.

Currently, Mattison is taking up space on the Marlins 40-man roster. He has seen time in three games this season totaling five at-bats. However, Mattison did not record a hit in any of those at-bats nor has he walked.
