You would hope to not have to point something like that out for a compliment, but given some of our deals under Loria, it is somewhat reassuring.

Basically they are saying Vallimont is better than Diaz one place, and Diaz is better than Vallimont somewhere else.
BA having him # 10 I think is a pretty big upgrade.
Fangraphs actually just updated him from a 35+ to a 40+, Marlins 13th overall prospect between Devers, Misner, VVM, and Holloway which seems about right overall.
Either way, this seems like a solid trade

NOT saying that he is the PTBNL and he better not be but Osiris Johnson was someone who Minnesota loved in the draft LY. Twins considered him in Rd 1 and would have taken him in Rd 2 which is why we took him in Rd 2 instead of Rd 2S

All the press I read about this, the Marlins really love this guy. One of the best left handed hitters in the minors is a pretty insane statement, with them knowing full well we all will be making fun of them in 2 years if he sucks.

I am expecting the Marlins to move to them a more inconsequential pitcher - Noesi, Milbrath, Eveld, etc. - who they could maybe use or protect on 40 man next year. Maybe this is even Tayron or Conley. We'll see.

That's a good point overall though. Maybe it's dependent on Minn. making other moves and depending on what they do, they'll take a starter (Noesi), RHP (Milbrath, Eveld), or LHP (Castano)?
Maybe it actually is Osiris and they want to see a medical report, and if the medical sucks, they'll take someone comparable (W. Stewart?). Who else is hurt in the minors that's important?
That would be something if it's L. Diaz for Osiris, Vallimont, and Romo. They are really confident in Diaz if that's the move.

This is straight up Jeter Downs or GTFO for me. Include a low level prospect and "Vallimont" it over to them too if they want. Soriano type?
Downs is interesting. He has (eyeball roundball) a .950 OPS vs LHP / .730 OPS vs RHP on a 2 year split. He can play 2B, SS, probably 3B, and the OF. Sounds like he could turn into a play everywhere Marwin who is a must start against lefties, and perfect for a NL bench otherwise.
Now combine that with L. Diaz sitting against lefties and Cooper flip flopping to 1B/LF AND/OR Didi absolutely does not hit lefties (he's like an .850 OPS vs RHP and .675 vs LHP on splits since 2017) if that is their longterm SS plan.
I'm into that big time.
Also into Nick Anderson throwing bullets.

When clubs consent to include a player to be named later (often abbreviated PTBNL) in a trade, they agree to decide upon or announce the final player involved in that trade at a later date.
Using a PTBNL can be especially advantageous after the non-waiver Trade Deadline, as players that would otherwise be required to first clear waivers can be included in the trade as a PTBNL -- provided they are not on the 25-man roster -- and officially sent to their new club once waiver clearance is no longer mandatory for a trade.
In other instances, the club sending the PTBNL away will provide the acquiring club with a list of players from which to select the PTBNL. In such cases, an agreed-upon deadline -- by which the acquiring club must select the PTBNL -- will often be set.

When did PTBNL become a thing, and why? Seems like there's so much grey area in there. I'm surprised there's never been a situation where a PTBNL has been involved in a trade, and then there being a huge blow-up between the two teams months later because they're disagreeing on the player. Just say as soon as a player is drafted that player is eligible to be traded. Want to trade for injured player? Sorry can't do it. Wait until he can pass a physical. It would simplify things so much.
