  • Heath Bell Doesn't Like the 'Let's Go Heat' Chants

Marlins players can hear Marlins Park fans cheering for the Heat

    by Joe Capozzi
The Miami Heat’s playoff run has been an interesting experience for the Marlins.

During baseball games at Marlins Park, loud roars have echoed through the ballpark from fans watching the Heat games on television in The Clevelander bar in left field. It will be that way tonight when the Heat play Game One of the NBA Finals.

But there have been a few times that the Heat cheering has rubbed Marlins players the wrong way.

Closer Heath Bell said he has jokingly yelled at fans in The Clevelander, which is next to the Marlins’ bullpen.

“I know I got annoyed the last couple of times because it was ‘Let’s go He-eat!’ I was like, “Let’s go Marlins!” I was yelling back at them,’’ he said today.

“Let’s go Heat. I was like, ‘Wow, we could use some cheering like that.’

“I know the Heat is in the playoffs and trying to get a championship, and they’ll probably be like that with us when football starts. I understand fans are passionate but you’re at a baseball game.’’

Bell’s advice to Heat fans at Marlins Park?

“Cheer when they do something or once in while yell out the score, but cheer on us, too.’’
The bar is separated from the bullpen by a window.

“You can tell when there’s a Heat game, there’s nobody by our window,’’ Bell said.
“They’re all over by the bar. We’re far enough where we can see there’s a basketball game on but we can’t see anything else.’’

Reliever Steve Cishek, a diehard Celtics fan, said, “You can tell something big happened when you hear a loud roar.’’

Manager Ozzie Guillen used the Heat’s playoff run to comfort Cishek after a rough outing.
Cishek gave up a home run to Atlanta’s Jason Heyward in the seventh inning on June 7. When he got back to the dugout, Guillen patted him on the back.

“He said, ‘Don’t worry, the Celtics are winning.’ He told me they were up by 20 in the dugout,’’ Cishek said.

“I walked in (to the clubhouse after the game) and they’re down by 20. I said, ‘You lied to me!’ He said, ‘Yep. I just wanted to make you feel better.’’’

Guillen said he wants the Heat to win because he likes LeBron James.

“I might be rooting for him more than his own family is rooting for him,” he said.

“I’m not a Heat fan – I like it when they do good – but I’m rooting for LeBron, with all due respect for the rest of the guys.. because that kid taking so much (criticism)…

“Every time they lose a game it’s that poor guy’s fault. I hate that…

Real question is why the hell is Capozzi asking about it?

The fact this even exists is stupid.

This is why we can't score any runs.

This is the second season in a row that Lebron has ruined.

Mostly, I think it's poor fan etiquette but it doesn't bother me too much. On the other hand, when MLB Tonight was at Marlins Park for Opening Day and there was a bunch of fans milling around the set, and THEY started chanting "let's go Heat," I was really agitated. The Heat was not in the playoffs and had not really done anything in that instant that was really worthy of attention. Meanwhile, the Marlins had FINALLY moved into a new ballpark, were debuting a new roster with significant free agent acquisitions, and the event was considered a story of national significance in the sport (given that MLB network was there). Vocally cheering the Heat in that instance was downright disgraceful and really speaks volumes about the quality of the fans in South Florida.

That specific example sucks, flum, and I agree with you in general.

                            But, considering that:

                            1) The Heat are in the championship series, something Marlin fans haven't seen in nine years
                            2) The Marlins are, seemingly most of the time, absolutely awful to watch and are allergic to the month of June
                            3) The Marlins themselves play clips of the Heat game on the titantron to pump the crowd

I don't think the team should be getting mad at fans. If situations were reversed, I'd expect that people would be watching Marlin playoff games during Dolphin/Heat regular season games
God would be expecting a first pitch breaking ball in the dirt because humans love to disappoint him.
