  • Yay a Win! Marlins 5, Astros 1

    The Miami Herald
Sanchez, who lost 30 pounds over the winter as he looked to return to his rookie form of 2006 when he was a 10-game winner and tossed a no-hitter, notched his first win of the season by throwing the ball over the plate and making the Astros put the ball in play.

Of his 89 pitches, 65 were for strikes. Nine struck balls were for singles, none for extra-base hits. But Sanchez, who struck out one and walked none, recorded 12 ground-ball outs.

    South Florida Sun Sentinel
Sanchez (1-1) threw more than 14 pitches in just one of the six innings he completed. All but 24 of his 89 pitches were in the zone for a career-best 73 percent strike rate. All but six of the 29 batters Sanchez faced saw a first-pitch strike.

In just two of 51 career starts had Sanchez topped the 70 percent mark for total strikes. He did it once his rookie season in 2006 and again in his first start of 2007.

    Palm Beach Post
Sanchez got all the support he needed in a three-run first inning in which Cantu become the sixth Marlins player with a hitting streak of at least 20 games. The streak is the team's longest since Kevin Millar hit in 25 straight late in the 2002 season.

The hit also extends Cantu's team record hitting streak to start the season to 16.
