  • Morning After: Marlins 5, Phillies 1

    The Miami Herald
The Marlins didn't rock Moyer, but the five runs they scored off him in the first inning were more than enough with Ricky Nolasco pitching. Using an effective sinker, Nolasco shut down the best hitting team in baseball, tossing a complete-game five-hitter in a 5-1 victory on a chilly night at Citizens Bank Park.

Nolasco carried a one-hitter into the sixth and retired the first 11 batters he faced before Chase Utley singled to center on a 2-1 pitch in the fourth. Jayson Werth stole what would have been Nolasco's second career shutout when he drilled Nolasco's 108th pitch -- a first-pitch fastball -- into the second row in left field with two outs in the ninth.

"I could attack these guys. They couldn't go up there swinging because they needed base runners," Nolasco said of the strategy that proved so effective against a lineup that came into the game leading the majors in runs scored, slugging percentage and RBI.

"To face that gauntlet for four times around the batting order, you have to tip your hat. He was outstanding," said Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez.

Until Saturday, no Marlins starter had pitched through the seventh inning.

"It means a lot," Nolasco said when asked about the significance of throwing a complete game. "Just to give that bullpen a day off and come out here and establish myself as a person who can do that. I think it helps the whole team in all aspects. Our bullpen can use a rest."
