  • Morning After: Marlins 5, Red 3

    The Miami Herald
The Marlins leaned on a familiar source for scoring help when Jorge Cantu drove in another run, extending his record RBI streak. But they also tapped into a new run supplier on Wednesday when Brett Carroll came off the disabled list and lit up the scoreboard.

Cantu and Carroll walloped solo home runs while pitcher Chris Volstad provided a workmanlike performance as the Marlins held on for a 5-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Thus ended a mini-slide in which the Marlins had lost their two previous games to the Reds in extra innings.

Cantu began the night with a share of the record Hall of Famer George Kelly set in 1921with the Giants. Willie McCovey (1969) and Tony Oliva (1970) would later match it. Of that quartet, Kelly and Cantu are the only ones to do it with a hit in each of the nine games as well.

Dating back to last season, Cantu has a 13-game hitting streak. His hit and RBI streak also stands at 13, the longest such run since Mike Piazza did it in 15 straight from June 14-July 2, 2000.

Volstad threw 117 pitches, the most in any one start in his career, and came close to becoming the first Marlins pitcher to go at least seven innings this year.

"It really didn't feel like 117, either," he said. "Maybe the (cool) weather helped with that because it wasn't as hot and humid as it normally is here."

Volstad left the game with two outs in the seventh after giving up a two-run home run to Paul Janish. Volstad allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

    Coghlan Out
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Coghlan is sitting because of the injury, not because of his hitting slump, and expects him to be back in the lineup as early as Thursday.
