Hotel tax receipts rise in Miami-Dade

Hotel taxes are growing again in Miami-Dade, with January showing the first gain in collections since August 2008. The 9-percent spike in countywide convention development tax receipts follows reports showing February's Super Bowl will bring another upswing in collections when those numbers are reported in April.

Miami-Dade pledged hotel taxes to fund about $10 million in annual bond payments for the new Florida Marlins ballpark. County projections call for flat collections through fall 2010, when the budget year ends. January's numbers bring the tally to 2.5 percent behind 2009's results, following declines last fall.

The latest report from Broward County shows hotel taxes still dropping through January, which saw a 2 percent decline -- far better than December's 13 percent retreat.
