Keith Law's breakdown of McCambley:
71. Zach McCambley, RHP, Coastal Carolina, Age: 21
McCambley started and relieved for Coastal in his first two years, but pitched well as a starter on the Cape last summer and carried it forward into this spring with four more good starts before the season ended. He has one of the best curveballs in the draft, arguably the second-best after Beeter’s, with a high spin rate on that and his fastball, which sits solid-average but plays above that. There’s effort in his delivery and he has to work on a third pitch but the two pitches he has right now would make him more than a back-end starter, and I expect some team to draft him with the intention of developing him in the rotation.

They definitely have shown a type, huh? High velocity fastball, and all of these guys seem like they have two plus pitches.
I wonder if they're banking on Jeter being able to help them land undrafted bats. It's been brought up, but having him call these kids gives Miami a big leg up on the competition. There's also the no state income tax thing, and the lure of living in a city like Miami. Of course, the history of the franchise is the negative, but it seems like they have some real selling points.

Another pitcher!
LHP Jake Eder from Vandy. He was ranked 59 by MLB.com and 70 by BA.

In the fourth round, #Marlins take LHP Jake Eder from Vanderbilt. Former teammate of JJ Bleday. Remember DJ Svihlik formerly worked at Vandy. Vandy coach Tim Corbin just said his skill set compares to Asa Lacy. #305OnTheRise

Well, I wished for a six pitcher draft with as many lefties as possible. One pick left to go. Liked Ian Seymour but we took Fulton at that point ... all good. Had Lacy been the headliner, I would have been very pleased with this draft. I wonder if we will ever get the true scoop on why we went reliever with the third pick in the draft. I can't buy that it was to save enough money to sign Fulton ... Lacy is what you dream of Fulton becoming.Last edited by Lee Stone; 06-12-2020, 08:23 AM.

I didn't love their first pick, and there were some other bats I wouldn't have minded seeing them take, but it's hard to fault their strategy or dislike what they did. I'm a fan of going big, and the Marlins went for guys with big time stuff. I know people are worried about the "reliever risk" with guys like Nicholas and McCambly, but at that point of the draft, if those guys end up being good relievers, is that so bad? Hopefully Jeter can now work some magic on the undrafted guys, because there's a real opportunity there.

i hate reaction to most drafts and especially baseball, but id be super curious the rationale for the all P draft. We do have really great SP depth but the lower minors from Jupiter or Clinton and below is a little lacking. I like meyer but the small frame scares me a little. I do like how he is supposedly close to major league ready already. The rest of the picks are pretty much a crapshoot to me.
We have such SP depth now its insane. Sandy, Caleb, Yamamoto, Pablo, already in the big leagues, plus sixto, Cabrera, meyer, garrett, rogers, guzman, neidert, dugger all either ready or will be ready sometime by the end of next year (if this had been a normal year). They are gonna have to do some serious evaluating next year.
The only real holes in our system now seems to be C and 3b. 1b is lacking depth but lewin is close and looks really good and anderson has 3b locked down for at least another 3 years. It's not the first time we have built a great farm system but this one seems a little different in both the potential star power and quaity depth, as well as a confidence in the current regimes player development that i did not have before. It really kills me that there is no minor league season this year, it was such an enormous year from a prospect development standpoint.

Posted a few times they were looking at Lacy/HS P/RP types who could SP. They got Meyer/Dax/McCambley/Eder(yes McCambley AND Eder are likely RP in ML)
Wanted a College bat that fell in Rd 2 but none were there and the P were too hard to pass
The last pick was the weird one. They need C in the system and there was 4/5 that they liked plus other arms they like. Kyle Hurt has talent but just was weird. Maybe tried to save some cash so they dont have to go 5% over?
We actually have 3B depth just none are there yet which is why BA should get extension. Nic Ready/Cristhian Rodriguez/Osiris/Yiddi Cappe all likely 3B
U serious about the lower level depth? No elite arms but u got Givin/Palacios/Fitterer/Mokma/Hoeing/Maldonado/Andrew Miller/Alegre/Leudy/Breidy and 4/5 others in DSL who would have been in Clinton or lower. Alot of depth however the main reason for the P heavy draft was they have NO spots open for position players in the system. C/3B only real spot of need
As for evaluating u are right. Not only all that they have to add Will Stewart/Brady Puckett/Josh Roberson/Palacios/Castano to 40 man. Lots of SP/RP have to have decisions made next year.
2021 and on should be ALOT of fun!! Also 2021 Draft is 20 Rounds,Miami has a 1S pick and should have another Top 5 pick IF MLB goes ahead with 82 games against NL and AL East teams. Don't forget owners have also asked for NO draft pick comp for FA and Miami has lots of $$$ to spend!!!! I cant wait till Marlins Chump is back saying he loves this teamLast edited by tjfla; 06-12-2020, 06:43 AM.

I think Meyer has electric stuff, I really do, the type of stuff that's rare to find in the MLB Draft. I just wonder about his ability to be a workhorse in a major league rotation. He strikes me as either elite back of the end reliever, or a starter who lights the world on fire for a while, but doesn't last. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Also, I disagree with you at least on Jupiter. I think the OF of Misner, Burdick and Scott is probably one of the best you would've found in Hi-A. That's not even counting Thomas Jones who is still a marginal prospect. It was probably going to be a rough year for Clinton, but it would've been interesting to follow the teenagers. I think Mesa Jr., Nasim Nunez, and a returning Osiris Johnson would've been there.Last edited by Nick; 06-12-2020, 10:04 AM.
