Jupiter dropped the second game of a three-game series against Ft. Myers tonight, 5-0. The Miracle sent a lefty to the mound to start, and Jupiter responded, for some reason, with six left-handed hitters in their lineup. It did not work out well. A number of scouts were in attendance, so despite the non-waiver trade deadline having passed, work is still being done. Former Marlin farmhand Danny Black is on the coaching staff of Jupiter, and he coached first base tonight. Here is my previous Hammerheads report, with player notes, from early April:

CF Corey Bird (7th Round Pick, 2016; spent 2016 with A- Batavia; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): The leadoff hitter went 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts, two of 16 set down on strikes by Ft. Myers pitchers. Bird has good size and a relaxed stance at the plate, bending his knees into a crouch as the pitcher delivers (perhaps as a timing mechanism?). He K'd looking on a pitch on the outside corner in the first. In the third, he had some bad luck, lining a pitch off the pitcher's foot. The pitcher was able to recover and just throw Bird out at first. He showed a good eye to walk on a 3-2 pitch in the 5th, but K'd swinging in the 7th on some offspeed stuff. He didn't show a very good arm in center, but it was just one throw.
2B Mason Davis (19th Round Pick, 2014; spent 2016 with GCL Marlins and A Greensboro; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): The diminutive lefty chokes up with two strikes. He was 0-4 with a strikeout, K' looking in the first. He has a bit of a bat waggle which, like Bird, seemed like a timing thing. He grounded out twice and flew out, getting down the line from home to first in a hurry, even on routine ground balls. His fly out was with the bases loaded and two out, on a 3-2 count, in the 5th. Defensively, Davis was charged for an error when he was covering first on a sac bunt in the 4th. He whiffed on the catch, allowing a run to score. The first baseman was trying to get back to the bag, so Davis may have been distracted by him.
1B Colby Lusignan (28th Round Pick, 2016; spent 2016 with GCL Marlins and A- Batavia; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): At 6'4", 230 pounds, Lusignan is tall with impressive arms. He went 2-4 with a double and a strikeout. He socked an 0-2 pitch into the left-centerfield gap for a double in the first. He struck out both swinging and looking. On his KS, he went down to one knee on a couple pitches, such was the force of his swing. He didn't appear to agree with the K looking in the 6th. He singled up the middle on a 94 mph fastball in the 8th, showing good bat speed. He played good D at first base.
RF Stone Garrett: Garrett is the one player who was in the lineup in April when I went to the game (check out my game report linked above for more on him). Stone was 2-4 with a double and a strikeout swinging. Early in the game, he seemed to have difficulty catching up to the starter's low-90s fastball. He popped out in the first and singled sharply to left in the 4th. He doubled off the wall in right in the 6th. At the dish, he stands far off the plate. He made two nice defensive plays, a diving catch in the 4th, and a running catch at the wall in the very next inning.
LF Boo Vazquez (Signed as a free agent, January 11, 2017; spent 2016 with Rookie League Burlington in the Royals organization; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): Vazquez was 0-4 with two Ks. His back foot kicks up chalk on the inside of the batter's box, so he stands close to the plate. He didn't look comfortable facing the lefties, striking out swinging on an offspeed pitch early. He was played to pull the ball. He struck out swinging again in the 4th, looking silly, spinning around in the box. He subsequently grounded out in both the 6th and 8th innings.
DH John Silviano (Signed as a free agent, June 22, 2016; spent 2016 with A Greensboro): Silviano was the recipient of the dreaded Golden Sombrero, striking out four times in four at-bats. His left arm is heavily tattooed. He is played to pull in the extreme, with the second baseman standing in shallow right field, and the shortstop behind the 2B bag. On the first strikeout swinging, he lost the bat into the crowd. The woman gave it back, to boos, as the crowd implored her to keep it. He struck out swinging two more times, and looking once.
3B Justin Twine (2nd Round Pick, 2014; spent 2016 with A Greensboro; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): Twine is still on the interstate this year, hitting a combined .184 in 283 at-bats at two stops this year. He was 0-4 with a strikeout on this night. He flied out and lined out in his first two at-bats, making solid contact both times. His strikeout was swinging in the 7th, offering at two balls in the dirt during the AB.
C Chris Hoo (27th Round Pick, 2014; spent 2016 with A+ Jupiter; has also appeared for AA Jacksonville in 2017): Hoo wears a brace on his left ankle at-bat. He was 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. He was fooled on a strikeout swinging in the 3rd, offering a half-swing on a high fastball. Defensively, he was not afraid to throw to a base to check a runner. He walked on four pitches in the 4th. He struck out swinging on a terrible pitch in the dirt in the 9th. Hoo was unimpressive in almost every way. Not bad, but nothing stood out.
SS Cleulius Rondon (Signed as a free agent, July 3, 2017; spent 2016 with A Kannapolis and A+ Winston-Salem in the White Sox organization; has also appeared for AA Birmingham in the White Sox organization in 2017): The slick-fielding Rondon went 0-1 with two walks and a K. He has an open stance. Rondon looked like Ichiro striking out in the 2nd, where his body was moving toward first base as he swung and missed. He walked in the 5th and 7th. He showed good range in the field.
SP Ben Meyer (29th Round Pick, 2015; spent 2016 with A Greensboro; has also appeared for A Greensboro in 2017): I was intrigued to see Meyer, who came into the game with an ERA under 1.00 in 13 games for Jupiter. Meyer lasted four innings, surrendering six hits, five runs (four earned), walking three and striking out three. He also hit a batter. Like last year, he has yo-yoed between starter and reliever. Meyer is tall and lanky, with a bit of a rock-back on his leg kick from the wind-up. His fastball was mostly 92 and 93. He wears high socks. Meyer comes from a closed stance in the stretch, and is quick to home. His offspeed pitch sat around 77 mph, getting a strikeout swinging in the first inning on the first offspeed pitch he threw. He works quick with no one on. His second strikeout was on a 94 mph fastball, which is where he topped out on that pitch. Control became an issue in the third, and continued into the fourth. In the third, he got into trouble when he loaded the bases on a walk, single, and a walk. Neither of his pitches were thrown consistently for strikes.
RP Ben Holmes: Holmes pitched in relief when I visited Hammond Stadium in April. Here, he threw two innings, allowed a hit, and struck out two. His fastball hit as high as 93 mph, and his offspeed stuff was in the 80/81 mph range. Both of his strikeouts came on the offspeed pitch, of which he was successful throwing on this evening.
RP Jorgan Cavanerio: It's a new role for Cavanerio, who started the game I saw in April. He has been a starter for the entirety of his time in the Marlins organization, dating back to 2011. That said, I like the idea of him as a reliever. He tossed two innings, giving up one hit, and striking out three. He had two really easy innings. He's not going to overpower you, but appears to have three pitches he can work with out of the bullpen.
