I did one earlier in the season on T&B, so here's today's:
Final weekend for NYPL action, as Jamestown downed Batavia 7-3 at Dwyer Stadium tonight. What I saw:
RF Austin Markel (Signed as an undrafted free-agent, 2009; also played for GCL Marlins this year): Markel was 2-5 with a double and three strikeouts, swinging twice. He also scored two runs and had an RBI. He didn't make much of an impression at the plate; like the rest of the Jammers on this night he had most of his success come early in the count, and could be counted on to chase offspeed stuff. He didn't make any plays in the field.
SS Chris Wade: (11th Round draft pick, 2009; also played for GCL Marlins in 2009): Wade was arguably the player of the game, and made the most important defensive play of the night. The Muckdogs were threatening in the 6th, with two on and two out down 4-1. A ball was hit in the hole, and Wade made a nice play to come up with it and made a rainbow throw to first to get the third out. Earlier in the inning, he went deep in the hole to snag one, but the throw wasn't in time. Not much he could've done with that one. At the dish, he was 2-4 with a double, triple, walk, two runs scored and an RBI. The thing I noticed about Wade was how short he was (he's listed at 6'0"), as well as how he doesn't stand still in the batter's box and is very twitchy. He does the Nomar batting gloves thing in between each pitch as well.
3B Chase Austin (5th round pick, 2009): 2-5 with three Ks (all swinging) was Austin's line. He also had three RBIs. He made a good grab on a liner in the field, and also fielded a good do-or-die to make the play in the 1st. He has played good defense both games I was there for this year. He has a good-sized frame with room to add muscle.
LF Kyle Jensen (12th round pick, 2009): Jensen was 0-5 with two strikeouts (both swinging). His flyout in the first was to the warning track, so he showed some power. Jensen is already solidly built. He fouled a ball off his foot late in the game, but the trainer didn't even come out to check on him. He struck out on the next pitch.
1B Dustin Dickerson (6th round pick, 2009): The first basement for the Jammers tonight went 1-4 with a strikeout. The 2B made a nice play on Dickerson's ground ball in the second to rob him of a base hit. The strikeout was when the pitcher came in at a lower arm angle and must've fooled Dickerson, because it was in the dirt and not even close.
C Carlos Paulino (signed as undrafted free agent; spent 2008 and some of 2009 with GCL Marlins): Paulino was 1-4 with a single and a run, as well as a swinging strikeout (he was way out in front of it). He didn't have to make any throws to second since no one attempted a steal. He let way too many balls get to the backstop though and may have been crossed up on at least two of them. He even made a snap throw to first to try and get a runner, with the bases loaded. That's gutsy. His single was a bunt base-hit to the third basemen. He really has a wide stance when batting, looking uncomfortable. Carlos got hit on the hand while catching as well and the trainer and manager came out to look at it, but he stayed in the game.
CF Erik Kanaby (3rd year player; signed as a free-agent, formerly of the Dodgers organization; played for Great Lakes of A League last year): Kanaby has the most experience and it shows: He has 37 walks and only 33 Ks heading into tonight. He was 1-4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI. He had a great AB when he hit the triple, fighting off a lot of pitches.
DH Mark Wyatt (signed as undrafted free agent, 2009): Wyatt was 1-3 with a sac fly, RBI and a run scored. His swings and misses weren't pretty, as he had his head way out on his swings. This was only his 10th game for the Jammers and professionally.
2B Nate Simon (27th round pick, 2009; also played for GCL Marlins): Simon was 1-3 with a sacrifice bunt. He had a bad AB in the 2nd, striking out swinging on three pitches. He didn't have many opportunities in the field.
SP Edgar Olmos (3rd round pick, 2008; spent 2008 and 2009 with GCL Marlins): This was Olmos' first game in Jamestown. He went four innings, giving up three hits, one run (earned), two walks and five strikeouts. Olmos had a shaky first inning, giving up a hit and two walks to load the bases before the pitching coach came out to settle him down. He threw a lot of pitches in that inning, but the next two went by quickly, as he even had an eight-pitch third inning. Olmos, a lefty, had good velocity and showed a changeup and a curveball, both of which he used more of as the game progressed. His wind-up is pretty normal, though he does seem to lean back a tad when lifting his leg.
RP Josh Hodges (7th round pick, 2009; spent time with GCL Marlins): This was Hodges' first appearance for Jamestown. My friend is the GM of the Muckdogs and his dad told me that Jamestown played five games in three days recently and was hard-up for arms, so hard-up that while they were in Auburn and the opposing team released two players, they immediately signed them. I thought this might've been one of the guys since he wasn't on the roster, but he wasn't. Hodges got the win, going four innings, giving up four hits, two runs (both earned), and striking out six while walking zero. He was shaky early, going to 3-0 counts on two of the first three batters he faced, but did well otherwise. He had a nice curveball that fooled a lot of guys.
RP Christopher Shafer (13th round pick, 2007; spent '07 and '08 with GCL Marlins): Shafer pitched the final inning, giving up a hit, a walk and striking out two. His stats look very good this year, but he does have more pro experience than most of the guys he's facing.
