Minor League shortstop Travis "Gookie" Dawkins, who played 90 games for Florida's Triple-A New Orleans affiliate this year, has been suspended for 50 games for violating the league's banned substance policy.
The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced the suspension on Thursday following Dawkins' second positive test for a drug of abuse in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
Currently on the New Orleans roster, Dawkins' suspension takes effect at the start of the 2010 season.
In 90 games with the Zephyrs, Dawkins batted .244 with five home runs, 34 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
The 30-year-old was the Reds' second-round pick in 1997, and 2009 was his first year in Florida's system.
Dawkins has four years of big league experience, with his last stint coming with the Royals in 2003. He has 13 total seasons in the Minor Leagues.
