C.J. Wilson is expected to meet with Marlins officials in Miami soon after Thanksgiving.
There are at least 13 teams interested in Wilson at this time and the bidding could easily rise above the Marlins' price range. But they have legitimate preliminary interest and will likely make an offer when the free agent left-hander visits, just as they did with free agent shortstop Jose Reyes and free agent first baseman Albert Pujols. Wilson, 30, posted a stellar 2.94 ERA and 206/74 K/BB ratio in 223 1/3 innings this past year for Texas. He's thought to be seeking a deal worth north of $100 million.

Over lunch at Joe's Stone Crab and during a visit to their new stadium, the Marlins told left-hander C.J. Wilson that they want him in their starting rotation next year.
To emphasize the point, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria led the ballpark tour Monday.
"They rolled out the red carpet. They seem to have a plan and made it very clear they'd like CJ to be a part of it,' said Bob Garber, Wilson's agent.
"I think he really impressed everybody today with his charisma. I think he'd be a great fit in South Florida.'
Garber wouldn't comment when asked if the Marlins made an offer to the free agent, but he said Wilson "probably" would make a decision next week during baseball's winter meetings in Dallas.
The Marlins face lots of competition for Wilson, who has been the No. 1 starter for the American League champion Texas Rangers for the past two seasons.
Wilson, a native of Southern California, had dinner with members of the Los Angeles Angels front office last week. Garber also has met with the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees.
Wilson has not ruled out returning to Texas, where he started his career in 2005 as a relief pitcher.
"It may be a deal where he comes back and says, 'I want to be in Texas,' and it makes sense and we're able to work something out, and it may not," Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels told reporters last week in Texas. "C.J. is looking for what the market will bring. He deserves to be well-compensated."
Wilson, 31, is 41-35 in his career with a 3.60 ERA. But he has pitched exclusively as a starter only since 2010, proving to be durable with 67 starts and 427 innings while going a combined 31-15 with a 3.14 ERA.
Garber also represents 34-year-old Roy Oswalt, who was 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA for Philadelphia last season. The Marlins have expressed some interest in Oswalt but have made it clear they prefer Wilson.
First baseman Albert Pujols, shortstop Jose Reyes and left-hander Mark Buehrle visited with the Marlins earlier this month, and all three have received offers.

Weaver got 85/5 from LAA and he gave them a discount (huge discount if you ask me), and CJ is asking for $100 mil with a discount? That's just too funny. Good luck CJ.

Weaver had a year of arbitration left so the Angels had some leverage over him. They would never have to go to the annual $23-25 with what Cliff/CC are getting. Saying that, Weaver is getting $16-16-$18-$20 in his free agency years, which is a bargain even considering the arbitration card. I think the Angels probably saved $3 million a season on these years from what Weaver could have realistically asked for and received given his service time. Overall, we're talking $10-15 million over 5 years and did not have to guarantee a 6th year (which I think is a bigger deal than the annual savings). So yea, Angels saved some bucks and backend. It's a great pro-club deal, but not comparable to a purely free agent CJ.
CJ is more comparable to Lackey and Burnett (each 5/$82). I don't blame CJ for shooting for the moon with $100-120 over 5-6, but at the end of the day no one is going to do that and 5/$85 is a realistic ballpark of where he should land. Weaver simply had arbitration, and gave up a little which was his decision. He is not a market setter for CJ.

Swifty

I still don't love the idea of CJ but if it's less than $100 mil, why not. As big a risk as he may be, isn't JJ staying healthy an equally big (if not larger) risk?
Big Z
11-29-2011, 09:50 PM
It seems as if CJ is Loria's SP priority this off-season and if he's coming at 75-80 mil, I'm biting.
I suppose. If we can get Wilson, Reyes, and Cespedes at reasonable numbers it'd be a pretty good offseason.
Big Z

What if we get Wilson, another SP (via trade or FA) and Aramis Ramirez :)
Anyone know what Aramis is asking for? I'm kind of scared of getting him, but at the same time intrigued. I also like Fielder on a 4-5 year contract, but there's no need to get a 1B, that still leaves a hole at 3B.

I wouldn't doubt that CJ Wilson gets $100 million from some team.
He's a free agent, and the market for SP is terrible; he's the best one out there.
Teams like the Nationals who are dying to make a splash it seems and have a recent history of overpaying/have a need for starting pitching...I could see a team like that making such a move.

I feel like this was a tough scenario for the Marlins. I think teams have to overpay in some respect to get the type of players they have gone after. Cliff Lee took less last year to return to Philly where he wanted to be. I'd imagine CJ might do the same if it's a chance to play for his hometown team. It's also been mentioned that he prefers the west coast.
Not saying I don't want him, I do. I'd actually prefer him to Buehrle. I just think it's going to be harder to get him with the Angels making a strong push and the Rangers could also up their offer if they lose out on Buehrle.
