Sometimes, at the end of the day, you are what your stats say you are.
You're pretty illogical when it comes to all things Volstad.
Oh, and I've seen Chris pitch. I've seen all his major league starts just like you. Just like the majority of the people on this forum. Just like Marlins management.
I have not seen him make his 3 starts in AAA, two in which he got lit up. There may have been sun in his eyes, or a mosquito bite to blame, or the wind was blowing out, or the fielders sucked or whatever, but he isn't doing well in his 3 starts so far. Let's be honest here.

Two starts and 8 of those runs came in two innings and the 9th should be unearned if I know anything about how errors are scored. His first start was excellent. The last 5.2 inning of his second start was excellent and he did get let down a bit by his defense last night. Don't just post stats and say he sucks. Hand's not exactly blown people away, either.

The scorer has a little bit of leeway with this one, if it's the second inning run last night that you're talking about. Woodward would've been on first had there been no error, then a single to right followed that up. That would likely put him at third (though you could argue he'd go station-to-station and be at second). The next single would've brought him home from third, or possibly even from second if he only advanced one base. I would say more often than not, you'd see that scored an earned run, but again, I think there is some leeway.

This has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with Brad Hand right now.
So what if the runs came in the first two innings? Do those innings now not count as much as if they happened in the third inning? I have no clue what you are trying to get at.
Here's how his start on August 3rd went:
1st inning: 2B, 1B, SF, 2B, F7, 2B, HR, G3
2nd inning: BB, K, F7, BB, BB, (coaching visit), G4-3
3rd inning: G6-3, 1B, 4-6-3DP
4th inning: K, 1B, F7, K
5th inning: K, K, 6-3
6th inning: G4-3, K, G6-3
7th inning: 1B, sac bunt
100 pitches, 67 strikes
Clearly, he got better as the game went on, but those first two innings are rough. Now if in his next start, he came out and continued the positives from the last 4.1 innings of the August 3rd start, I would like to think we were on to something. But this was not the case. Here is how his start last night went:
1st inning: F8, 1B, WP, BB, Snider steals 3B, K, F7
2nd inning: G6-3, K, 1B (advance to third on Dominguez error), 1B, 1B, G6-3
3rd inning: 1B, 5-4-3DP, F7
4th inning: G6-3, BB, 1B, F8, 1B, 1B, SB, BB, (coaching visit), F9
5th inning: K, K, F8
94 pitches, 61 strikes
Another start where he's giving up base runners early and often. It finally came back to haunt him in the 4th inning. Over his last two starts, he has just 3 innings without giving up a base runner.
I don't know any other way to put it, but he's not pitching well right now. I'm sure you will somehow take this as a shot at you or that I don't want Chris to succeed. I want him to. I absolutely do. It's good for the Marlins if he is pitching well. But at best right now, he's a 5th starter but he can't seem to do well against AAA hitters over the last 10 days.

Talking about Volstad's K/BB ratio is bullshit and you know it. Volstad is not JJ. He has never been a fucking strikeout pitcher. Ever. Quoting his K/BB ratio is meaningless.
By the way, since you like the stay so much, how about Hand's sub-1 K/BB ratio?
Also, all of his hits allowed last night were singles but nobody gives a shot about that apparently. You all just want to shit all over him and tell me that I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT HAND VS. VOLSTAD YOU DUMB ASSHOLE.
Chris Volstad is not a strikeout pitcher, that's great. That means that you can't get away with walking a batter every other inning against AAA hitters. How can you ignore that?
Great, he only allowed singles last night. He also walked 3 guys in 5 innings, so he allowed 11 baserunners, for a 2.1 WHIP. That's dreadful, even if he's only giving up singles.

How is it not Hand vrs. Volstad? You think Hand deserves to fucking stay in the rotation? He who averages 3 walks a game and has only pitched into the 6th inning twice in eight games (one against the Astros who really are fielding a AA team this year) deserves to stay in the rotation? Look at his stats in my sig? He's averaging less than 5 innings a start and, until yesterday, had been extremely lucky not to get shelled a couple times. Just compare that to Volstad's last 8 starts in the majors and you'll see a big difference.
Yes, they both have things to work on but at least Volstad isn't going to drain the bullpen every 5 days.

I don't hate him but he's not ready for the majors and he's going to start getting shelled now that teams have seen him and have video on him. Look at last night. The second time facing a team didn't go so well, did it? Having him up and putting so much pressure on the bullpen is not good for anyone.

Bobbob1313
08-09-2011, 04:02 PM
Do you agree with her that Volstad>Hand?
Yes. That has nothing to do with the discussion, which is that Chris Volstad is pitching extremely poorly in AAA. I also think Brad Hand has a higher ceiling than Volstad.
I do not think that either should be with the major league team and both could benefit from spending the rest of the season in the minors.
I said it before, I'd rather see a retread like Chris Sampson finish out the season and see if Volstad or Hand can figure things out down there.

This is not about Brad Hand. This is not about Chris Volstad. This is about you. This is about your overstated, inflated, un-fucking-reasonable infatuation with one, Christopher Volstad; a marginal professional athlete, who at best, can serve as rotational fodder for a shitty team. It's gotten to the point, that I honestly don't even believe it's real. My meager brain can more easily grasp a picture where MK7 has birthed an elaborate, years-long prank in creating the personality of 'Mibs,' rather than a picture of blind psychosis about the greatness of one, Christopher Volstad.
I used to laugh at this. I used to think of you as a 6 year old who thought his Dad was Superman. But that's over. Now, you are Ted Bundy and I can't fucking stand it.

I think we've seen enough of Volstad to know what we have. This doesn't mean that I think Hand should be up in the majors. It just means that Volstad shouldn't right now.
He absolutely stinks right now. I hope he figures it out in AAA, I really do. And yea, people around here are starting to hate Chris and it has nothing to do with Chris himself. It has to do with your insanity surrounding him.

Volstad has a FIP of 4.50...he's a solid 4/5. You can find 4/5's anywhere so what's so bad about having him in the minors now working on his stuff? Hell, maybe he can learn something. Slim chance obviously but who cares if he's on the MLB team right now? We aren't going anywhere and we might as well try to help him and see if he can become something in the future because he's still young.

HEHEHEHAEHEASJHEHEHEA.
Because Volstad has been terrible for 3 years. Hand only has been for like 6 starts.
But thank god I get to see your retarded psycho bullshit everyday. This place would suck without it.
I mean, if she wants to make the argument solely that Volstad should be here instead of Hand, then I agree with her.
Because eating a handful of dog shit is better than eating two handfuls of dog shit.
I think Volstad is awful. I don't think he's gonna get better anymore. We're 93 starts into his career. He is what he is. I'd rather have him up here getting his ass kicked than Hand, who could be good one day but isn't ready.
So, because I think Volstad will always suck, I agree with mibs.

Also, I love that Hand is her pick a prospect or whatever they're called.

Marlins-related transactions from Baseball America, from the 3rd through the 9th:
-Red Sox signed former Marlin OF Brett Carroll, who elected free agency from the Brewers.
-Phillies signed OF Chris Lubanski, who went to camp with the Marlins this year.
-Two Indy leaguers were signed by the Marlins: P Alex Caldera and P James Leverton, and both assigned to Greensboro. They were released by the Nationals and Cubs in April. And, of course, IF Jesus Merchan was traded for IF Alfredo Amezaga.

I remember him having mono his first year, a broken elbow from being hit by a pitch this year, and now this. What else has happened?

He was brought up by someone in Colorado in Baseball America's Hot Sheet Talk...
Mike (Colorado): JJ. Come on now!! How can Matt Dominguez have not made the hot sheet?? All he did this week was go 12-22 (.545), 2HR's, 8RBI's and only 1 strikeout.
J.J. Cooper: He was No. 21, really. It's been a nice bounce back in the second half for Dominguez. As we've said before, he doesn't have to hit a ton because his glove is so good.

.902 OPS in July, .916 in August.
Awesome.
Also, Bryce Harper hits the ball hard. Really fucking hard:

Holy shit.
--------------------
And as far as those Gboro young bats - they've had a ridiculous second half.
Since the All Star Break:
Yelich - .346/.402/.529/.923 (40 G, 6 HR, 14:30 BB/K, 13 SB, 1 CS)
Realmuto - .294/.356/.507/.863 (37 G, 7 HR, 12:29 BB/K)
Perio - .310/.341/.468/.808 (40 G, 3 HR, 7:18 BB/K)
Ozuna - .318/.372/.607(!)/.979 (43 G, 10 HR, 13:38 BB/K, 6 SB, 0 CS).
Yelich is awesome. Just a solid bat across the board. The baserunning and speed comes a big plus, as that was never touted as part of his game coming into the draft.
Realmuto is getting cooler and cooler. Apparently has a shot at being a plus defender, with an extremely big arm from behind the plate. He's been hitting hard lately with 4 HR in the last 6 games.
Perio does not strike out. Seriously, he has like a 12% K rate as a 19 year old. He also doesn't walk. Just tons of contact.
Yeah, Ozuna is super streaky, but he's made significant improvement this year. He's cut down his K's big time. He's striking out 23% of the time which is respectable when you consider his power output.
Of course, there's always the Greensboro factor to consider

It would be cool if Jensen finished the season in AA strong. Bad start at first, but if he turns it around and puts up a pretty good line, it would be cool.
Not sure if he can be a starter, but I'm glad they finally called him up.
For what it's worth, Josh Willingham was also 23 in Jupiter and Jensen out produced him, although the Hammer did have much better plate discipline.
Alex Sanabia put on AAA roster
is he healthy now?

Been pitching in Jupiter, made 3 or 4 appearances and threw 6 innings on the 12th, so it sounds like it.
cool, I dig
and this can be used again!
