Alex Rodriguez is batting down a report he took part in Tinseltown's top-secret Texas Hold'Em circuit. "Mr. Rodriguez has not participated in these poker games," spokesman Richard Rubenstein told the Daily News after Star Magazine reported A-Rod was one of the A-list ring's clandestine card sharks. Star claimed to have three sources placing A-Rod at a high-stakes game at the home of one of the ring's regular high rollers. A-Rod's denial comes six years after the Daily News reported his visits to illegal poker parlors in New York and his vow to walk away.

That ball looked like it went a mile high before coming down.
--------------------
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The fan that fell approximately 20 feet over the railing and behind the scoreboard in left field has passed away.

The Rangers, understandably, closed the clubhouse after the game. The club was told of the tragic accident, including Josh Hamilton, who tossed a ball to the fan, who ended up leaning over the railing to catch it.

"I think as any of us would be, Josh is very distraught over this as the entire team is," Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan said.

Holy shit that's terrible...
--------------------
Full story:

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A male fan has died after falling over the outfield railing and landing on the concrete behind the out-of-town scoreboard at the Rangers Ballpark during the second inning of Thursday's game between the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that the man who fell has passed away as a result of this tragic accident," Rangers president/CEO Nolan Ryan said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

The Rangers closed the clubhouse to the media after their 6-0 win. They haven't released the name of the fan because they aren't sure if all the family members have been notified.

The left-field wall is 14 feet high and the fan went over the railing, which is a few feet higher, for an approximately 20-foot drop.

The fan, wearing a blue Rangers cap and white Rangers shirt, was seated in the front row and, according to others seated near him, was yelling at Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton for a foul ball that was hit by Conor Jackson and landed on the field. Hamilton flipped the ball toward the fan and the fan leaned over, caught it and toppled over in the gap between the railing and the back of the scoreboard on the left-field fence.

After the game, the team, including Hamilton, was told what happened.

"I think as any of us would be, Josh is very distraught over this as the entire team is," Ryan said. Ryan added that the Rangers are "very heavy-hearted about this."

Rangers manager Ron Washington said: "Josh is fine -- outwards he's fine. I guess he's got to deal with it in his own way."

Washington said he will decide on Friday whether Hamilton needs a day off after what happened on Thursday night.

"I tried to grab him, but I couldn't," said Ronnie Hargis, a 50-year-old from Hawley, Texas, who was sitting beside the falling fan. "I tried to slow him down a little bit. He went straight down."

Hargis said he was chatting with the fan earlier in the game and that he was a firefighter from Brownwood, but didn't know his name.

Several fans, including Safawna Dunn, said paramedics quickly got to the fan and took him off in a stretcher.

"He was conscious," Dunn said.

The Rangers had released a statement saying the man was taken to John Peter Hospital.

The incident comes one year and one day after a fan fell from the club level and landed in the lower deck, a 30-foot drop. That man, Tyler Morris, was taken to a local hospital after the game was stopped for 16 minutes to get him out of the stadium. Morris, coincidentally a firefighter as well, suffered a fractured skull and sprained ankle and went home two days after his fall.

Thursday's fall is the third by a fan over one of the railings. The first was April 11, 1994, after the Rangers' first home game in Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Hollye Minter, a 28-year-old from Plano, Texas, posed for a photograph and fell from a railing in right field. She landed on empty seats and, according to various reports, broke her arm, two ribs and a few bones in her neck.

Club officials said the railings were raised after that game from 30.5 inches to 46 inches in the upper and lower areas of the park.

On Thursday night, Ryan, in response to a question about whether the Rangers would assess the safety of the railings, said the Rangers were "not prepared to speak about anything further than the accident and the tragedy tonight."

Since then, he's thrown nine scoreless innings over two starts. He is a former two-time 19-game winner, so maybe the two years the Nats have invested in him may finally pay off.

CrimsonCane
07-12-2011, 12:30 PM
Do people really critique the player when he's been selected undeservedly? Most people get upset at the fans or the league for implementing the flawed system. I can't recall an instance where the fan reaction was to ask the player to actively reject their invitation for a more deserving replacement.

You get invited, you go. It's an honor and, deserved or not, it's bad form to decline an All Star Selection.

Swifty
07-12-2011, 02:18 PM
I don't disagree that it's an honor to be, and disrespectful to not go, especially if selected by the fans (regardless of how merited the selection is).

I do think you are under estimating how much noise there would be around his presence as an undeserving all-star if he hadn't gotten 3,000 in such a spectacular way, or if he had failed to get 3,000 at all. Maybe it wouldn't be directed "at" him, but it would be a tremendous maelstrom around him, either way, he's in the center of a shit-storm.

The one gripe I have about Willy Mays is that in interviews he says with complete sincerity that, if he wanted to, he could've been more of a power hitter but he simply chose not to. And he implies that hitting for power was just not how he wanted to play the game. I remember hearing him once say, proudly, that he intentionally tried to hit for power once and hit 2-3 out in a single game then he just went back to being a more "complete hitter." it's hard to convey but his tone strikes me as if he sincerely believes that he could've been a consistent 35-50 home run hitter if he wanted to.

That's either delusional or incredibly selfish.

Just read this on fangraphs and thought it was amazing. He threw 104 pitches Tuesday and 103 of them were fastballs.

Lou Marson had a pretty easy eight innings catching Justin Masterson Tuesday night against the Minnesota Twins. Any catcher would gladly receive for a performance like Masterson’s — eight scoreless innings, bolstered by six strikeouts and only blemished by four hits and one walk. And it just may have been the single easiest game a catcher has ever called. 104 times Marson put a sign down with his right hand. 103 times it was the ol’ number one.

Yes, merely a day after Sam Miller wrote this piece wondering if a pitcher would ever throw an all-fastball start, Justin Masterson was one fourth-inning slider away from doing just that. All but one of Masterson’s pitches sat between 89.9 and 97.7 MPH, and as the results of his start suggest, they were mightily effective, carving up Twins batters to the tune of 10 swinging strikes on top of the shutout performance.

Overall, 10 swinging strikes in just over 100 pitches isn’t an overly impressive mark. It’s good — at 9.7%, it’s well over his season average of 7.7% and above the league average of 8.5% — but even if Masterson maintained that rate for the whole season, he still wouldn’t land in the top 25 qualified starting pitchers.

This is because the fastball is the least likely pitch to induce a swing and miss. It makes sense — whereas the curveball and changeup are often about deception and movement, the fastball is a “here it is, hit it” kind of pitch. The fastball is a pitch at its best when hitting a corner where it’s not even worth it to swing, and if contact is made, it’s weak. This notion is supported by the data — according to TexasLeaguers.com, the league-average whiff rate on fastballs is only 6.0%, well below the overall whiff rate of 8.5%.

Masterson has had an immensely successful season with Cleveland this year, posting a 2.64 ERA and a 2.89 FIP. The reason for his success, both in Tuesday’s start and the season-to-date, is clearly his fastball. He goes to the pitch 82% of the time, the highest of any starter in the league, and although it usually isn’t quite as dominant as it looked against Minnesota, a whiff rate of 7.0% (according to the aforementioned TexasLeaguers) with the fastball is impressive, especially when hitters know it’s coming.

Hitters make adjustments, and one would imagine we’ll see a few more sliders from Masterson in his starts down the line, if only by necessity. But his fastball is a very special pitch, capable of inducing the swings-and-misses and ground balls that aces are made of. Tuesday was the best exhibition of just how powerful that pitch is for Masterson, and maybe someday soon we’ll see him eschew that one slider and truly treat us to the all-fastball start. If anybody is capable, it’s him.

Justin Masterson’s (Almost) All-Fastball Dominance (http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/justin-mastersons-almost-all-fastball-dominance/)
