ITS THE NATS
Chris Volstad:8-9 4.35era
vs
Craig Stammen: 3-6 4.96era

Marlins:55-52
5-5 in last 10 games
26-26 on the road
33-37 against RHP
21-16 agains the NL East

Nationals:36-72
6-4 in the last 10 games
22-33 on the road
27-54 against RHP
12-32 agains the NL East

Season Series: Marlins leads, 9-2

Scouting Report:
Marlins: Volstad was perfect through four innings in his last start before surrendering a hit to Aramis Ramirez in the top of the fifth. The right-hander flustered Cubs hitters until the seventh inning, when Jake Fox clubbed a game-tying two-out, two-run homer. Volstad finished his start allowing two runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out five. The 23-year-old has allowed a home runs in seven of his last 10 starts and 10 home runs over that span.

Nationals: Stammen started for Washington on Saturday, and he had nothing in the tank. He lasted three-plus innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. While Stammen was on the mound, outfielder Lastings Milledge burned his former team in the third inning by hitting a two-run double. Stammen didn't record an out in the fourth inning.

Just so I can be sure:

if we had lost one of the early season natinals games (the one hermida hit the homer for) and split the first two of this series, would people be freaking out?

mbitcronod12
08-06-2009, 10:18 AM
I checked the game preview earlier and saw in the weather section that it was raining. I checked the hour by hour forecast (http://www.weather.com/outlook/events/sports/hourbyhour/graph/USDC0001?from=tenDay_topnav_sports) and it's suppose to rain there until about 7 pm. It's entirely posible that this game could get postponed, especially considering how both teams are in the same division and the Marlins will be coming back to Washington in September.

That wouldn't actually be a bad thing. Then we wouldn't need the 5th starter this weekend. We could just run out Volstad, Ricky and JJ in the series against the Phillies that we need badly. Pray for rain!

Bake not hitting 8th!

Looking at the futurecast radar from the weather channel, the rain is supposed to start full force about 45 minutes into the game and not stop for hours. The worst thing that could happen is for the game to start and get called early.

Who would you take out of the top two? Coghlan? He doesn't slug enough at this point to warrant being lower in the lineup. Maybin? I realize that he hasn't proven anything at this level, but I think he needs a shot to produce at the top of the lineup next year.

Also NJ wants a two year contract but shouldn't get more than atleast a 1 year plus option contract. From the way people are talking I wouldn't be surprised if the LF/1B market takes another dive this offseason. So at that point we'd be in competition with the other 29 team in baseball with offering him some 1year/few mil contract. Which doesn't make it impossible for us, just that we then have competition if we don't want to overpay

And I really don't want Logan in LF :D

I'd rather have Uggla than Johnson next year considering LoMo is the same type of player as Johnson.

Both guys are about .800 OPS guys, Uggla will give you about 60 points higher slugging, and Johnson will give you about 60 points higher OBP, and considering I don't expect Maybin and Morrison to combine for as many HRs as Uggla usually puts up in a year I think he's the better fit.

Plus, Johnson has injury issues, and Uggla has really never gotten injured as a major leaguer.

If we can get him cheap (and he is rather underrated) then that'd be cool, and he is a fan favorite so there is that benefit. But he's also already 28. Well. A guess a 3 year contract with a team option 4th year wouldn't be horrible.

However, CF is locked (Maybin), rf is locked (stanton), and we have a glut of OFers who atleast one should emerge that could produce close to his level and only make 300k (carroll, cousins, petersen, and maybe Raynor if he decides to stop being a dick). It's just not a position of need.

I would like us to offer Nick Johnson a contract for next year and have a lineup of:

Maybin CF
Coghlan 2B
Hanley SS
Johnson 1B
Ross RF
Morrison LF
Cantu 3B
Baker/Platoon mate C

If the lineup next includes all of those players, I think it will be:

CF Maybin
1B Johnson
SS Hanley
3B Cantu
RF Ross
2B Coghlan
LF Morrison
C Baker

If we can get him cheap (and he is rather underrated) then that'd be cool, and he is a fan favorite so there is that benefit. But he's also already 28. Well. A guess a 3 year contract with a team option 4th year wouldn't be horrible.

However, CF is locked (Maybin), rf is locked (stanton), and we have a glut of OFers who atleast one should emerge that could produce close to his level and only make 300k (carroll, cousins, petersen, and maybe Raynor if he decides to stop being a dick). It's just not a position of need.

I'd like to see Carroll get a shot to start in 2010. Then come 2011 when Stanton is ready, the organization can decide between Ross and Carroll for that last outfield starting spot. If Carroll proves he's worthy of being a starter great, if not hopefully we can sign Ross to a reasonable deal. I like Cousins, Petersen, and Raynor, but none of those guys are even close to being a sure thing, but if one of those guys has a breakout season in 2010 then it's not a discussion.

What I'd like to see:

2010

1. Maybin CF
2. Morrison 1B
3. Ramirez SS
4. Uggla 2B
5. Ross LF
6. Baker C
7. Coghlan 3B
8. Carroll RF

2011

1. Maybin CF
2. Morrison 1B
3. Ramirez SS
4. Stanton RF
5. Ross/Carroll/Other LF
6. Uggla/Coghlan 2B
7. Baker C
8. Dominguez 3B

Have to think that if Ross can be signed for a solid rate for that 3(+1) term deal, he would also have solid trade value if his stats hold based on his cost. That's, of course, assuming both Maybin and Morrison are well established major leagues starters and that Stanton can hold his own at the big league level when arriving.

It's no better than you knee-jerking about how we only have two relieable starters. Every pitcher is going to have their bad days. Everyone. The trick is to make those starts rare ones.

it's not knee jerk, it's true. no one could make a reasonable argument that volstad has been consistent or reliable, vandenhurk has had only a couple starts and we don't even HAVE a fifth starter

How can you say that? He's had like 3 bad starts out of 23. This one and the two back in June. Other than that, he's been pitching well.

We have less of a book on VandenHurk but he's had 1 bad start out of 4. We need a bigger sample size.

You can't just make these kinds of statements after 1 bad start. 3 or 4 in a row, maybe, but not 1.
