When I think Dollar Monday, I think Potomac Nationals.
Well, now I can also think Nationals-Pirates.
Monday, May 16 is $1 MONDAY: $1 tickets, $1 hot dogs, $1 peanuts, $1 popcorn and $1 parking! Get $1 tickets for seating in the LF/RF Corner (Field Level), LF/RF Mezzanine (Mezzanine Level) or Upper Infield Gallery (Upper Gallery Level) and $1 parking in Lot HH. $1 tickets can be purchased either online or at the box office. $1 parking can be purchased with cash at Lot HH on game night. All $1 tickets, parking and food specials are valid only in the areas listed, subject to availability in select locations and good while supplies last. Some restrictions apply. Limit of two $1 tickets per order.
Maybe they’re trying to avoid another mocking appearance on Colbert Report, which happened last time the Nats played the Pirates on a Monday night.
If you can’t make the Monday game, the next day is Two-Dollar Ticket Tuesday, though you’ll have to pay full-priced for your hot dogs. Guess the Pirates aren’t a huge draw in D.C.
They sold out the Monday $1 tix in no time at all.

this is crazy. The Yankees and Orioles game has had all but 2 of the hits being singles. Dickerson just got hit in the face...Gonzalez got tossed so now the Orioles are going to tomorrow's starter to pitch.

Interesting article about our old friend Scott Olsen.
In the 24 years that I have covered the major leagues, fans have consistently asked me three questions: 1. Can you get me autographs? 2. Can you get me free tickets? 3. Does it bother you that the players make so much money?
My answer to all three has always been ‘no.’
It’s unprofessional for a reporter to ask a player for an autograph, it is unethical for a media member to accept free tickets and if sports writers were offered multimillion dollar contracts, I’d sign up for one.
I’ve made a special exception to my stock answer for question No. 3 in the case of Scott Olsen, the left-hander who was released by the Pirates last Saturday.
The Pirates signed Olsen for a guaranteed $450,000 last December with the idea that he would be strong contender to win a roster spot at the back end of their rotation. Even though Olsen was a combined 6-12 with a 5.76 ERA in 28 games, 26 starts, with Washington in 2009 and 2010, it seemed a worthwhile gamble.
The Pirates were guaranteeing him just $36,000 over the major-league minimum salary of $414,000 and the 27-year-old had showed flashes of brilliance during his four seasons with Florida from 2005-08.
However, there were also warning signs that Olsen could create problems.
During his time with the Marlins, Olsen received a black eye as the result of a late-night scuffle with a teammate, had well-documents dugout blowups with managers Joe Girardi and Fredi Gonzalez, and was arrested during 2007 for driving under the influence, resisting arrest with violence and fleeing and eluding a police officer. Then there was Olsen’s chain smoking, which he never tried to hide.
Yet the reason I begrudge the fact that Olsen walked away from the Pirates with $450,000 isn’t because of his bad attitude, smoking or drinking. It’s the way he went about getting released. Olsen threw a fit in spring training when he was told he would have to compete for a spot in the bullpen instead of in the rotation because a strained hamstring had put him too far behind in order to be ready to begin the season as a starter.
Olsen had been on the disabled list since opening day and sources with knowledge of the situation claim his attitude didn’t get any better while he rehabbed at extended spring training.
Thus, Olsen gets a parting gift of $450,000 just to go away — a sum a common man would hope to make over a 10-year span - — by virtue of doing little more than complaining. It must be great work if you can get it.
Pitching and Moaning Paid Off for Olsen (http://www.timesonline.com/sports/local_sports/perrotto-pitching-and-moaning-paid-off-for-olsen/article_77f2e413-8f57-5573-8691-9cc42eb78fb2.html)

Scott has always had a bad attitude, so that's nothing new. I talked to a Pirates guy yesterday and he said that Olsen didn't want to move to the bullpen and that was the potential only opening they would have.

After Bryce Harper went to visit the Washington Nationals' team optometrist in April, the baseball phenom got a surprising assessment.
Harper tells the Washington Post that Dr. Keith Smithson told him: "I don't know how you ever hit before. You have some of the worst eyes I've ever seen."
One contact lens prescription later and the No. 1 overall draft pick is reaping the benefits of his improved vision. In 20 games with the Class A Hagerstown Suns since his visit to the eye doctor, Harper has been on fire. He has hit a staggering .480, collecting 7 home runs, 10 doubles and 23 RBI.

No matter how low you set the bar, the New York Mets can find a way to limbo under it.
Just a week ago, the Yankees had the public drama for a change, with the front office squabbling with Jorge Posada over his self-removal from the lineup.
Then the injury-riddled Mets clawed back from 5-13 to .500 with a Subway Series-opening win in the Bronx on Friday.
Two subsequent losses were a dose of reality.
Now, Mets fans have to wake up to this: Principal owner Fred Wilpon -- who at 74 years old still very much has all his faculties -- goes for the nuclear option.
In a lengthy magazine piece -- which the organization undoubtedly thought would help the ownership family's image by telling Wilpon's rags-to-riches tale -- you first learn about how brother-in-law Saul Katz's endowment, and we don't mean bankroll, contributed to the building of the family's real-estate empire.
But the part that's buried in the New Yorker article is what will have the Big Apple airwaves abuzz Monday and beyond.
Wilpon decides to mock nearly all of his top players, while comparing his team to a pile of poop.
The principal owner says free-agent-to-be Jose Reyes ain't worth Carl Crawford money (seven years, $142 million) because he's always injured. He gives a backhanded compliment to David Wright, calling him a nice guy and very good but not a superstar. Wilpon saves his best material to describe Carlos Beltran.
The owner called himself a schmuck for giving Beltran a seven-year, $119 million deal off a record postseason with the Houston Astros in which Beltran slugged eight homers in 12 games.
Wilpon calls his team snakebitten and all but mocks Beltran for taking that infamous curveball from Adam Wainwright that eliminated the Mets in Game 7 of the 2006 National League Championship Series.
Fans may think those very things, with the possible exception of Reyes' financial worth. (Give Reyes whatever you have to in order to retain him, fans largely believe.) But the owner cannot say such stuff.
It was charming when the late George Steinbrenner publicly picked fights with players, but that was his personality quirk and designed for motivation. In Wilpon's case, it's just pathetic.
You would think having owned a New York baseball team for three decades, and with his cadre of public relations advisers, Wilpon would know better. But the Mets consistently have made the worst choices in presenting themselves to the public.
If you grant hours and hours of access to a reporter, you'd better be incredibly polished and stay on the message you're attempting to put out -- your rags-to-riches tale and how Bernie Madoff betrayed you. If you let your guard down and this comes out, well, beware the backlash.
Reyes may be a goner at the trading deadline or after the season, but Wilpon did himself no favors in the interim as far as their relationship, not to mention how the comments will be received by fans. Beltran is a goner too. But Wright is the face of the franchise.
It's been quietly whispered for some time by team officials that Wright is viewed by the organization as an elite complementary piece but cannot be the guy. But why say it publicly and antagonize Wright, who happened to play with an undiagnosed broken back for a month because he is such a gamer?
Irving Picard, the trustee suing the Wilpon family for more than $1 billion, should seriously take a step back and wonder if he really needs to keep sending out press releases to help his cause. The Mets' own self-destructiveness will take care of his public relations.
Wilpon uses the term "snakebitten" to describe the franchise.
Unlucky with some injuries? Definitely.
Snakebitten? No way. You largely make your own luck.
