Picture this: A strapping young left-handed hitter from the New Orleans area with a smooth stroke and a great eye at the plate.

After an impressive two-month debut stint in the major leagues, he’s opening the season with the big club and is poised to become one of the National League’s young stars.

Now forgive yourself for conjuring vintage Will Clark.

This generation’s sweet-swinging lefty is Logan Morrison, a former Slidell resident, Northshore High graduate and former player with the New Orleans Zephyrs. On the cusp of his beginning his first full season in the major leagues, Morrison is the most talented offensive player to emerge from New Orleans since Will The Thrill. His Florida Marlins open the season tonight against the New York Mets.

Winding down the spring schedule last week in Jupiter, Fla., Morrison admitted that he was enjoying spring training more this year with the knowledge that his position as a part of the Marlins’ starting lineup is solid.

“It’s helped out a lot, helped me relax,” he said. “I can focus more on the process of getting ready for a major league season rather than having to go out and produce numbers right away. (Last year) there was no time to see pitches. If there was a pitch that was right there, I had to swing at it. I couldn’t see how it moved.”

Seeing pitches is a major part of Morrison’s game. He averaged 4.09 pitches per plate appearance, a statistic used as a measure of plate discipline, last year in his rookie season. That placed him 11th in the National League.

Morrison’s approach at the plate is what got him called up from the minors last year. After spending the bulk of the season playing first base for the Triple-A Zephyrs, he got the call in late July and was placed in left field, a position he had only played sparingly in New Orleans. The defensive transition still is a work in progress, and Morrison cites learning the position as his greatest challenge in the big leagues.

The adjustment to major league pitching went smoothly. Morrison had a .390 on-base percentage and seven triples, good for eighth in the National League despite his limited at-bats.

For a player 23 years old, plate discipline on Morrison’s level is rare, something he attributes in part to his years playing for Coach Ned Eades at Northshore. Morrison remembered a high school practice where he was on third base and the hitter walked.

Thinking the bases were loaded behind him, Morrison trotted home only to be thrown out. Fuming, Eades told the talented Morrison that he also was lazy.

“I try to be more disciplined now,” Morrison said with a smile.

Although he never struggled at any level in the minor leagues, last season was Morrison’s most difficult. His father, Tom, died last winter after battling lung cancer. Given his father’s health situation at the time, Morrison said he was grateful to play for his hometown Zephyrs in 2010.

“Especially with what my dad with going through, (playing in New Orleans) was very important,” he said. “I got to spend time with him. Coming to the games, talking with him after the games. ... It kept his mind off what was going on.”

Morrison now is in Florida, and it appears he is there to stay. Marlins Manager Edwin Rodriguez, who managed Morrison last season in New Orleans as well as during Morrison’s stints in the lower minor leagues, said he is a crucial part of the team’s future.

Florida might not yet have the talent to compete with the Philadelphia Phillies in their own division, but with their collection of home-grown, cost-controlled youth such as Morrison, Josh Johnson, Mike Stanton and former Zephyrs Gaby Sanchez and Chris Coughlan, they’re not far off.

“The Florida Marlins organization has had a master plan for years,” Rodriguez said. “When Logan Morrison got into the system, when Mike Stanton and Chris Coughlan got into the system. ... they were able to point them out as part of the future, into 2011. From the get-go, Logan Morrison has been one of those guys.”

Erick
04-21-2011, 10:10 PM
Why not just call up Badenhop and carry the extra reliever? At least Badenhop can give quality innings out of the pen.

Petersen is rather useless.

We're ok for now with a short bench of Hayes, Dobbs/Helms, Murphy, Cousins. And Bonifacio's versatility means you can move him around anywhere making late moves convenient, either way.

Petersen does nothing. Just wasting a roster spot.

TealMonster08
04-21-2011, 10:17 PM
I like Erick now for writing that. Even if it is probably wrong.

Omar
04-21-2011, 10:20 PM
Since Murphy doesn't seem to be able to handle regular ABs (hasn't had more than one AB since Tax Day), you're basically limiting yourself to a bench of 1.5 (because two of Bonertron/Dobbs/Helms/Cousins have to start). I don't think we can afford that at the moment.

Erick
04-21-2011, 10:25 PM

Good point.
But Petersen can't hit, anyway.

If (err, when) they call someone up, I'd rather have Salazar.

Bobbob1313
04-21-2011, 10:27 PM
He has basically identical numbers as the guy already on our bench who hit a grand slam today.

nny
04-21-2011, 10:34 PM
dwayne wise made bad choice

But Pete has a .256/.408/.462/.870 line in NOla right now with a 9/9 BB/k

If we remove someone (Which we very very very likely won't) there's also Ruben gotay, who's hitting .269/.397/.423/.820 and you gotta wonder about "Starting 3b?"

Erick
04-21-2011, 10:37 PM
Not everyone can transition from the minors to the majors.

It's obviously a rather small sample, but Cousins was actually playing this way last year, at the end of the year, when given a chance.

Petersen, on the other hand, has looked overmatched in his brief time in the big leagues. Like, he's literally been a waste of a roster spot the few times he's been called up.

Plus, I would imagine a right-handed hitter makes more sense, at this point. Helms is the only right-handed option off the bench, with Murphy being unavailable to hit/not wanting to use Hayes because he's the backup catcher.

I'm guessing they'll just callup Salazar.

nny
04-21-2011, 10:44 PM
the point is Petersen is doing grossly better than last year (.686 OPS, 0.54 K/BB) - But, while this year is a very small sample size, he was well enough thought of prior to his fall off last year that he might be back to form.

More importantly is the 40 man roster spot. Morrison will be back and Salarzar/Gotay is out of options. Unless they're getting called up for potential starting option - and not a bit spot off the bench - I doubt they remove someone from the 40. Possible - and likely makes us a better team - but I doubt it.

Miamarlin21

MIAMI GARDENS — Logan Morrison got an earful Tuesday from manager Edwin Rodriguez, who wasn't happy when the injured outfielder ran on the field to celebrate the Marlins' victory in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday night.

"We had a conversation, a very mature conversation,' Rodriguez said. "It was - How do you call that? - a monologue, with his eyes open.'

Morrison went on the disabled list last week with a sprained left arch. He had the cast removed Monday afternoon, but the foot is far from being healed.

Rodriguez didn't see Morrison leap up the steps and celebrate with his teammates after Omar Infante's two-out single. But after being alerted by a team trainer, Rodriguez went to a video monitor to see the replay.

"When I looked at the picture, there he is, right in the middle,' Rodriguez said.

By then, the players had left the clubhouse. So, Rodriguez's first order of business Tuesday to talk to Morrison. He wouldn't share exactly what he said.

"You don't want to know,' Rodriguez said, rolling his eyes. The gist of it: "You have to be smarter." Rodriguez said Morrison got the message.

Post-game celebrations are a delicate topic for the Marlins. Last July, Chris Coghlan suffered a season-ending knee injury while celebrating a walk-off win.

"Chris Coghlan last year and now Logan Morrison,' Rodriguez said. "We can laugh now - nothing happened.'

The Marlins, who have nine come-from-behind wins this season, have had a few on-the-field celebrations, including players applying the shaving cream pie-in-the-face, which is how Coghlan got hurt last summer.

But Rodriguez noted that even those celebrations have been toned down.

"I like it. Times change,' he said with a laugh. "We have to make adjustments."

ST. LOUIS — As the Marlins take on the Cardinals at Busch Stadium, Logan Morrison continues his recovery process from a strained left arch back in South Florida.

Morrison is working out at the Roger Dean Stadium complex in Jupiter. The other day he was re-examined by doctors, who have cleared him to do more baseball activities.

In the past couple of days, Morrison has taken swings in the batting cages, and he’s done some light running. On Wednesday, he is expected to take batting practice on the field.

The Marlins return home to face the Nationals on Friday, and Morrison is scheduled to do pregame workouts with the team.

Before being reinstated off the disabled list, Morrison will play in some rehab assignment games, which could begin early next week.

MIAMI -- Logan Morrison tweets to the amusement of thousands and the dismay of his team's top executive.

The 23-year-old left fielder known as "LoMo" may lead the league in Twitter wisecracks.

"It's amazing how many people take you seriously," he says. "I don't take it seriously at all."

That's what worries team president David Samson. The Marlins monitor tweets by all of their employees, and Samson says he has warned Morrison that his R-rated material could carry negative repercussions.

"I'm not a dinosaur," Samson says, "but I'm not thrilled. It's very scary to me. I've told Logan, 'People are waiting for you to make a mistake. They're going to bait you on Twitter to say something inappropriate that you can never take back.'

"It takes an entire career to build a reputation, and one tweet to lose it. As long as he understands that, it's fine."

Morrison has more than 26,000 followers. That total's impressive considering he's less than halfway through his first full season in the major leagues and plays for the Florida Marlins, a team unaccustomed to attention.

Morrison estimates the age of his audience at 15 and up. He says he'll tweet with asterisks on occasion but otherwise sees no need for self-censorship because kids are going to come across the language he uses somewhere else anyway.

"If you don't want to follow me, don't follow me," he says with a shrug.

Not all of his humor is of the clubhouse variety. Many LoMo tweets can be fun for the whole family.

But Morrison also tweets about sex, body parts, the Miami Heat and humidity, odorous cabbies, the Philadelphia Phillies and the injury that sidelined Morrison in April.

"Breaking news: sprained ligament in my foot out 2 to 4 weeks," he tweeted. "Told u fantasy people not to pick me up."

Morrison says he's just being himself: a native of Kansas City, Mo., who grew up a Coast Guard brat, lost his father to lung cancer and is blessed with the ability to hit a major league curve.

Whether he's sitting at his locker, watching TV at home or eating at a restaurant, LoMo's liable to be tapping out a message on his iPhone. When asked if he would ever tweet during a game, Morrison hesitates before saying no.

"I think he has a slight addiction," teammate John Buck says.

Morrison engages in exchanges with his Twitter followers, unlike celebrity athletes who limit their tweeting to status reports on dinner plans and such. Morrison says he understands why famous Twitterers might dislike interacting with the not-famous, but he sees it as a chance to break down barriers and show he's a regular guy.

Morrison also freely concedes he's trying to promote himself. He began using Twitter before the 2010 season at the suggestion of his agent, Fred Wray, who saw it as a way to expand the LoMo brand.

"Twitter fit Logan," Wray says. "It's an online conversation, and Logan likes to talk. He has the gift of gab."

Soon after Morrison reached the majors last July, his followers outnumbered attendance at the typical Marlins home game.

"The main goal was to get my name out there and make me more money and bring more money to the causes I support, like the American Lung Association," Morrison says. "In this market you've got to do things you wouldn't ordinarily do to get followers, and it's working."

His late father's battle with lung cancer ended in December, and Morrison traded stories about the illness with others on Twitter. After he recovered from his foot injury, his auctioned cast sold for $1,500, with the money going to the lung association.

Morrison adopted another cause: campaigning for Marlins first baseman Gaby Sanchez to make the All-Star team.

If not for Morrison's injury, he might be a contender himself. After hitting .283 in 62 games as a rookie last year, this season he's a big part of the Marlins' surprising success, batting .322 with six home runs through Monday.

When it comes to Twitter popularity, Morrison can't rival Nick Swisher (1.3 million followers), Jose Canseco (394,000) or even Ozzie Guillen (143,000). But he figures the best way to gain ground on them is with base hits.

"Obviously the better I do, the more followers I'm going to get," he says. "I'm sure it will be way up if I make an All-Star Game; it doesn't matter how original or funny I am on there."

On that point, Morrison and the Marlins brass agree.

"I've told Logan," Samson says, "no one will care about his tweets if they're coming from New Orleans (where the Marlins' Triple-A team plays)."

Eh.

I don't get Samson; he's made it very clear over the last 9 years they've been here that not only do they not care about public opinion, they openly flaunt their indifference.

This is the same guy who criticized the Ichiro contract, who had neither subtle nor secretive conferences with the mayors of Las Vegas and San Antonio and who still disputed the deadspin figures even when faced with seemingly incontrovertible evidence of authenticity.

It would be one thing if we were an organization built around morals and character, or with a team first mentality that minimizes if not all together eliminates the mindset of singular importance, but that's not the case here; nor has it ever been with this ownership group.

Talk to anyone around the Marlins, and you will hear that left fielder Logan Morrison is the emerging leader of the club.

Morrison, 23, proved it twice recently, calling out Giants GM Brian Sabean for his comments about the Marlins’ Scott Cousins and then his own owner, Jeffrey Loria, for the team’s firing of hitting coach Dave Mallee.

Many of the younger Marlins were upset by the dismissal of Mallee, their former minor-league hitting coach. Morrison merely gave voice to their concerns, but both Loria and Marlins GM Larry Beinfest spoke to him about criticizing the owner.

Yet, Morrison is not backing down.

If anything, he found it curious that in his conversation with Loria, the owner linked Morrison’s reaction to the player’s loss of his father, Tom, last December.

“(Loria) said he’s not mad at me,” Morrison said. “He basically said that you’re an important part of this organization and you’re going to be for a long time, and that going through what I’ve gone through, he understands why I’d be mad.

“I didn’t understand what one thing would have to do with another, personal life and baseball. But I kind of went along with it.”

Some with the Marlins say a change in hitting coaches was necessary, that Mallee placed too strong an emphasis on hitting mechanics and too little on mental approach.

The bottom line: The Marlins indeed operate differently than most clubs, with Loria occasionally making impulsive decisions. It will be interesting to see how much dissent the team tolerates from Morrison, one of the top young hitters in the game.

“They talked to me about it and said I can’t call out the owner and say this is why he got fired,” Morrison said. “I really don’t understand what I did wrong. It was accurate. It wasn’t a lie.

“I still don’t understand it. But sometimes you do things you don’t understand. I won’t do it again, I guess.”

Well, Morrison at times might want to choose his words more carefully, but he shouldn’t hesitate to be honest. Baseball needs more players who actually speak their minds.

Marlins left fielder Logan Morrison has been told to tone down his comments by president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest after Morrison's reaction last week to the firing of hitting coach John Mallee.

Morrison said he was told he can't "point fingers at the owner, stuff like that," after he said it was not "right" and not "just" that Mallee was dismissed last Wednesday.

"I was like, 'OK,' ' Morrison said about the conversation. "I don't quite fully understand that because I didn't really say it in a negative way. I might have been written that way, I don't know. I was asked a question, I told the truth. But I guess I don't do that anymore."

Owner Jeffrey Loria also spoke to Morrison, but Morrison said Loria is cool.

"He's not really mad," Morrison said.

On the night of Mallee's firing Morrison also hinted the front office was putting pressure on the players. "Everybody has their finger on the panic button. It's hard to relax and play baseball," he said.

Several players were upset over Mallee's firing. The popular coach was in the organization for over 10 years, more than eight of those as the organizational hitting instructor before being promoted to the Marlins when Edwin Rodriguez replaced Fredi Gonzalez as the manager a year ago.

Morrison, 23, is the most outspoken player in the clubhouse. He is popular on Twitter with 35,138 followers and the Marlins already have told him to tone down his tweets after some inappropriate comments.

Surprisingly, Marlins interim manager Jack McKeon and 23-year-old outfielder Logan Morrison don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to Twitter.

On Saturday, the same day McKeon benched Morrison after a 4-for-33 batting slump, the Miami Herald quoted the 80-year-old McKeon telling him that he needs "to start spending more time on baseball and less on that Twitter [stuff]."

The same day, Morrison unveiled a new, oddly professional Twitter avatar that features a cartoon Marlins player with a piece of tape across his mouth, because hey, how dare his bosses tell him to stop acting like an Internet clown even though he can barely hit a baseball anymore and has been nothing but a pile of shitty PR for the club this month.

And the conflict goes deeper than the over-the-top avatar. It was inevitable: To McKeon, Twitter is a mysterious clicky lightbox machine, but to Morrison, it's the only reason people talk about him at all.

It was cute at first -- a few weeks ago Morrison told McKeon that he was going home to "play" with Twitter, and Morrison tweeted that McKeon responded with "what kind of dog is it?" But apparently McKeon doesn't take kindly to getting made fun of on those new-fangled interblags, because now he's started calling Morrison "Twitter." To the press. It's unclear if he means this as an an insult, or if he really thinks Morrison is actually Twitter.

It's not the first time the Marlins administration has gotten peeved at Morrison's big mouth: He caused a big stink earlier this month when hitting coach John Mallee was fired, and administrators told him to shut up -- you know, because your first full season in the majors is probably not the best time to start bad-mouthing your management. And maybe because he's not very good at sounding smart, and perhaps because he's batting .189 in June, including a 1-for-14 slide this week. Pick any of them -- he may have been a big deal when he got called up, but right now he's just another cog in a failing machine, and he's got a bigger mouth than the other cogs.

There's no denying that Morrison is funny when he's tweeting about trying to get an "hour long back scratch or tickle" at the Vinoy or mooning Tampa from a hotel room, but until he picks up the production, it doesn't look like he's catching any slack from Trader Jack.

Man, this guy turned into a heel mighty quick. I dont even Vince McMahon could have orchestrated this any better.

Not sure you understand what a heel is. Logan isn't a bad guy. He's just a bit immature, which is fine as he's a youngin.

There are plenty of youngins on the Marlins that are immature yet manage not to come off as a complete tool box with the whole Twitter thing.

The whole Twitter thing works if he's producing. Being in a huge slump and being a Twitter "celebrity" just doesn't work.

I did; I was just wondering if it was someone from here.
