View Full Version : Stealing an Idea

So guys, on another forum that I am on (Reds) they, via voting, compose their own top prospect list. I thought that in order for us to get through the monotony of the off-season we could try this. They are currently at their 17th prospect, but I thought we could not go as in depth and go to maybe top 10 or 15. I'd do all the work, all you'd have to do is vote and discuss. This prospect list would be Marlins players only.

Thoughts? Comments? Concerns? Love for me?

Just leave it to Ramp.

He knows.

(might be a fun idea, though, and give a run through of the "candidates")

You don't think I'm capable?

You don't think I'm capable?

Its not that I don't...but Ramp already does a top 50 and has been doing it for years now.

Oh he does? My bad. I figured we must have already have something on here established because we have everything else. I was going to be surprised if we didn't.

you're more than welcome to do this anyway

No Ramp, it's totally fine. I don't want to step on your toes at all.

It should be interesting considering all of our prospects have basically graduated. Hopefully we can add Alex Meyer or Mikie Mahtook to it next year. Yes, I'm on the draft these bandwagons.

This is totally different than what Ramp does. He does a personal ranking, this would be a community ranking. I think it's a great idea. We do it at the Blue Jackets one I post on, it's fun.

Well if you guys want to do it then I can start it on Monday. We just gotta agree on the "rules" and shit.

50 IPs for Pitchers and 150 ABs for Hitters. I believe that's the rules for being considered a rookie. Maybe it's 135?

I meant more as how many days the voting lasts, how many we do, and if we have a close call, do we do runoffs.

I think everyone names their top 20 prospects, with 20 points going to the #1 rank and so on. tally them up and see what happens. a tie is unlikely i think but if there is one they can just be tied, or we can break it by progression (highest level player goes first) or something

Agreed. Sounds fun. I think mk7's idea to get started is worthwhile.

Community prospect rankings are fun. It'd be even more fun if after we have the top 15, 20, 25, whatever, we then give each one their own player performance thread and keep it updated, that way, we can see what our #__ prospect is doing throughout the year.

Alright so which way do you want to do it? How I proposed, everyone voting or how MK7 suggested, with everyone doing their own top whatever and tallying it up.

Voting would encourage more participation than having separate lists. Either way will work.

I think the voting would be more fun because people will argue over why someone should be ranked over someone else.

Like the idea.

I'm assuming our farm system isn't very impressive at this point, considering most of the good prospects are already at the major league level. I'd be interested to see what the new list would look like.

It's not as notorious as it used to be Erick. We don't have a big name like we did the past few years.

The system blows these days

I like the voting system.

We could mirror the rules used on minorleagueball.com, where they list the top candidate, and we vote on who is the best prospect out of them. The one with top vote gets 1st place, then we vote again on who is the 2nd best prospect out of the remaining candidates, ect.

http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/11/27/1839323/community-positional-prospect-5

here is an example.

They are breaking down prospect by pitchers and hitters, but we dont have to do that.

I think voting would be better if your looking to draw up more discussion but I like the idea of everyone creates a list and scores are tallied better.

How it'll go is this. I'll make a thread asking who the number one prospect is. Then I'll have 15 or so choices for you to vote on. The voting takes X amount of days and once the voting is over, whoever has the most votes wins. Then I'll make another thread asking who the number two prospect is and put the same names out there (excluding the already voted player) and it'll continue until we get to either 10 or 15, whatever we decide.

I think voting like that is going to lead to skewed results in several ways.

1) If we're on the 3rd prospect, for example and 40 people vote, and 9 vote for player A, 15 vote for player B and 16 vote for player C, player C is going to get 3rd place by just one vote. Then when we go to 4th place votings, the 16 people who voted for player C (who is now off the table) happen to like player A a lot, and player A ends up with more votes than player B. So player B, who missed 3rd place by 1 single vote, can no longer place higher than 5th. That seems odd to me.

2) Guaranteed voting will drop off significantly throughout the process, even if it's only 10 prospects. You could have 40+ votes for the #1-2 prospects and 8 votes for the #9-10 prospects. Skews things considerably.

If you have lists, you have the exact same number of votes for the #1 prospect, the #10 prospect and so on.

Obviously your right but I think the idea is to keep participation on the site up which is why I like voting for each ranking better.

We can a run-off vote bewteen two players if the votes are close.
