It shouldn't be pro football, because if that's the case then how would we differentiate the UFL from the NFL?
<--- actually intrigued by UFL

Also, these new jerseys are quite handsome and make me question why the Bills continue to wear their abortions of current uniforms as opposed to the throwbacks

Couple of thoughts on this:
A) Very risky. Don't want to upset the fragile McNabb whose psyche is frail enough as it is. He was a little annoyed at some of the questions during the presser too.
B) The contract is odd. 1.6 for the first year and then a team option for 5.2 in year two? That's a lot to pay for a utility guy or a backup QB. Makes me wonder if something is up for next year.
C) The upside is very nice here when you mix him in with Maclin, Westbrook, Jackson, Shady McCoy. If Vick can accept a role that involves 6-10 plays a game then I'm for it.
I'm back and forth on whether or not I like it.
In what world is Vick getting 6-10 plays a game?
Being dead serious here. Are they going to Wildcat him?
FishFanInPA
08-14-2009, 12:00 AM
Reid mentioned that tonight that he would consider it but he has some package ideas for Vick.
Mainge
08-14-2009, 10:18 AM
Wildcat, quick screens, tosses and reverses. Try him at a return role. He's not a good QB but his tremendous athleticism can be a weapon and the Eagles coaching staff is creative enough to find a way to get him on the field.
Plus didn't they use the Wildcat last year with Jackson, fip?
Brandon Marshall acquitted

he got caught and he paid a huge price. what else do you want? he APPEARS to have changed his ways. if he has and he stays out of trouble than whats the problem?
now if he turns out to be pacman jones then get rid of him. pretty simple to me
Do you think he'd still be doing it if he was never caught? Do you think that he'd say these things if he had no interest in returning to the league?
That's not the right question to ask. The question is: Now that's he been caught and punished (therefore knowing for sure that it's wrong), will he do it again?
Also, trying to get back into the league (aka have a job) isn't necessarily a bad thing. Gives a goal to reach while he strives for normalcy.

What you guys have said is all well and good but this is the NFL not a reclamation project. The Eagles didnt need Vick and dont need the distractions that come with it.
I also wanted to bring this up. On sports radio at home (i know you all love that), there were a lot of black people crying racism because he's a "ghetto" black quarterback. Do any of you feel that this is involved with why there's a lot of outrage against him because I don't at all.
wanks1212
08-17-2009, 09:26 AM
well, anyone who calls into/takes seriously sports talk radio is a steakhead. that said:
some jackasses probably treat him differently b/c he's black, and yeah that's always goinig to be an issue for them. but for the most part, the outrage has to do with him electrocuting/drowning/beating a "family pet" as opposed to doing the same thing to a "farm animal" (like a cow or chicken or pig), and our different standards for treatment of dogs vs. every other animal

For Fippuh, re: Chat Thread;
Not when he's on the sidelines. He's not going to play more then 5 plays a game unless injuries force him there.
Do you understand what it is for a defense to prepare for something?
See, the difference between preparing for Michael Vick and preparing for the Wildcat is absolutely monumental. The Wildcat is a glorified gap assignment exercise. The defensive line has to not be stupid and over-pursue and the defensive backs have to stay at home and adjust their coverage. Baltimore showed that a good, disciplined defense can absolutely shred the Wildcat.
Michael Vick is not an exercise in gap assignment, he is not just simply an exercise in staying at home in coverage. His ability to improvise, combined with his athleticism is pretty much unprecedented, sans when Fran Tarkenton became the first QB to scramble as a weapon and defenses were like "Wait, wut, you can do that?"
It doesn't matter that he may only be in their 5-10 plays a game. Those are 5-10 games that will stretch the field in any number of games... he may not be a "good" quarterback... but, in the scheme of things, he's much much much better on a WR Reverse Pass, HB Pass or any iteration of non-QB passing you can think of.
And, in the meta-sense... you act like "OMG we don't need him, lols, we made the playoffs"... yay, super, you did. Except, you lost your three best defensive players and one of the best defensive coordinators in football for the season... you need to buffer those defensive losses, and getting Vick on what amounts to a no-risk deal, on the cheap, gives you the opportunity to do that.
However, most Eagles fans (at least the ones they portray in the media) are too busy looking down their collective noses at Vick, boasting some false semblance of "character" when, if/when this guy has like 500 yards passing, 500 receiving and 500 rushing and however many TDs, you guys will be bragging that you have him next year, potentially, too.
I can understand a "wait-and-see" attitude, the dude's shown contrition, and if Goodell of all people says he can play back in the league, that should mean something... But to sit there and act like he just got out of jail, hasn't done counseling, hasn't admitted he was wrong and is just taking football for granted... gimme a break.
And if you reply with "Well, I'd like to see how you'd act if the Steelers signed Vick"... I'd come to terms a while ago that there was a HUGE chance that it was going to happen and am convinced the only reason it didn't was because the Eagles offered more money in year two. And, for all the reasons explained above, I was fine with it.

NEW YORK — Former New York Giant Plaxico Burress pleaded guilty today to a weapons charge and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.
The ex-wide receiver pleaded guilty to one count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he initially faced. Under a plea agreement, he agreed to a two-year prison sentence and two years of supervised release.
Burress was indicted earlier this month on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of reckless endangerment. He faced a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years if convicted at a trial.
The guilty plea ends months of haggling between Burress’ attorney and the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The case went to a grand jury earlier this month after negotiations broke down, apparently because District Attorney Robert Morgenthau was insisting that Burress serve at least two years in prison.
Assistant District Attorney Mark Dwyer said it is standard policy to request a two-year sentence as part of a plea bargain on such serious charges. Sentencing was set for Sept. 22.
In a Manhattan state Supreme Court room on Thursday, the soft-spoken Burress, wearing a dark blue suit, first entered a not-guilty plea to the initial charges against him. After attorneys on both sides conferred, Burress said, "Guilty" to the new attempted weapons possession charge.
His attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said in court that the 31-year-old Burress was thinking of his family in taking the plea, although he questioned the recommended prison sentence.
"This was not an intentional criminal act," Brafman said. "In my judgment, a two-year prison sentence is a very severe punishment."
With time off for good behavior the sentence could be reduced to 20 months.
The football star and former teammate Antonio Pierce were at the Latin Quarter nightclub in late November when a gun tucked into Burress’ waistband slipped down his leg and fired, shooting him in the right thigh. The bullet narrowly missed a nightclub security guard who was standing inches away, prosecutors said, lodged in the floor and was recovered by a bartender.
The gun was not licensed in New York or in New Jersey, where Burress lived, prosecutors said. His license to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Florida had expired in May 2008.
Prosecutors said Pierce drove Burress to a hospital, then took the gun to his own home in New Jersey where it was later delivered to Burress’ home.
Pierce was not indicted. The grand jury also did not indict the nightclub security guard who carried the gun to Pierce’s car or the hospital staff members who failed to notify police that Burress had been shot.
Burress, who caught the winning touchdown for the Giants over the New England Patriots [team stats] in the final minute of the 2008 Super Bowl, also could face disciplinary action by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
The Giants released Burress in April and he has yet to sign with another team.

Dolphins: Two cornerbacks awaiting swine flu test results
BY JEFF DARLINGTON
jdarlington@MiamiHerald.com
FILE PHOTOS
Cornerbacks Sean Smith, left, and Jason Allen, right, both fell sick late this week, a source said. The Dolphins advised their players this morning that two of their teammates will not attend tonight's game because of the swine flu, but it appears the team's explanation to its players is the result of the medical staff attempting to assume the worst.
Cornerbacks Sean Smith and Jason Allen both fell sick late this week, sources have told the Miami Herald, and each have spent the day in bed. Team spokesman Harvey Greene says the players are still undergoing tests to determine the actual diagnosis.
"Two players are sick,'' Greene said. "They are undergoing tests. We don't have the results of the test yet, but when we do get them, it is personal health information that will not be released publicly.''
Multiple sources maintain that they were told this morning by the team that at least a pair of their teammates would not attend tonight's game because of the "swine flu,'' which was the exact illness the team used to explain to the players about why their teammates would miss the game.
Another team source said any explanation given to the team about the swine flu was the result of the team trying to take every possible precaution to avoid an epidemic.
At this time of year, doctors generally don't test for swine flu, instead assuming that any flu-like symptoms are indeed infected by the swine flu in the summer months. Smith felt fine Thursday night, but became very uncomfortable Friday. He has spent all day in bed.

The Bills aren't going to win more than 5 games. Their offensive line is a fucking sieve, and Trentative Checkwards looks like shit. Their skill position players are awesome (provided T.O. is healthy and Marshawn Lynch doesn't get suspended again), but without an offensive line they won't win shit.
And no, this isn't just based on the preseason, which is essentially meaningless. But it has confirmed some of my worst fears for the season.

Bengals tackle Andre Smith just provided another dramatic plot point for Hard Knocks.
The sixth overall pick of the draft broke his foot Tuesday, just two days after signing with the team. The injury came in a non-contact drill and Smith will not require surgery on the foot.
"It's too soon to closely predict how long it will be before he can return to practice. But it looks like he's going to miss a few weeks," coach Marvin Lewis said.
The Bengals seemed hopeful Smith could get in shape fast enough to start at right tackle in Week One, but those plans will have to be scuttled now.
Somewhere, Carson Palmer is shaking his head.

Oh and:

wanks1212
09-04-2009, 12:31 PM
They are, and it's actually a smart idea with the offensive line deficiencies.
The idea is that the no-huddle ensures the defense has to keep the same 11 players on the field and can't freely substitute. Meaning the d-line can't get fresh pass rushers in, which presumably is an advantage for the offensive line, because the d-line gets tired easier (possibly a dubious argument, but there's some merit). This works to the Bills' advantage, because tired defensive linemen aren't as good at pass rushing. And the Bills' primary deficiency in their offense is their offensive line.
Using a quick strike, no huddle offense when you have a shitty offensive line is alot better than having the team attempt to be a power rushing team with the same offensive line. And Lord knows they won't be able to pass protect on 5 and 7 step drops against a fresh defensive line. Maybe the no-huddle wears down the other defense, and as a result the Bills linemen get some advantage.
Of course, this assumes the offense doesn't continually go three and out. Becuase, in that case, they're on the field for like a minute, and the Bills defense gets worn down because the other team controls the time of possession. Which is probably what's going to happen, but I don't fault them for trying to mix things up and play to their strenghts (good, versatile skill position players who can execute multiple formations with the same personnel, smart QB who can make adjustments at the line of scrimmage)
Mainge
09-04-2009, 12:50 PM
I understand the philosophy behind it but I don't see it being successful. Your asking young linemen to do things they've never done before, atleast not consistently. I think there will be lots of missed assignments, miscommunication, etc.
Guess we'll see.
Fritz

That's a lot of talent.
wanks1212
09-04-2009, 01:03 PM
Oh, I don't see it being successful either. But that's because of quality of players on the offensive line (and the likelihood Trent Edwards gets hurt), not because of the philosophy.
When your team has substandard talent, you have to be creative on offense and do things that other teams don't do in order to succeed. The Dolphins' use of the Wildcat was a great example of how to do this properly. The Bills no huddle will likely be an example of how to fuck this up.

It should also be noted that the Bills have 5 new starters on the offensive line, including 2 rookies who are learning new positions, a right tackle who used to be a guard, and a left tackle who (1) used to be a right tackle (2) wasn't good enough to play for hte goddamn raiders and (3) is being seriously pushed by 2008 7th round draft pick (and illegitimate, unacknowledged child of Karl Malone) Demetrius Bell.

that no huddle offense for the bills is gonna by interesting, especially against the pats, belichick loves to substitute, and the no huddle doesnt allow many subs.
And that could give the bills a huge advantage. But then again the bills could go 3 and outs and they're on the field for minute, mutliple times, and that defense could be gassed by the 4th quarter

Former NFL quarterback Sean Salisbury was a journeyman at best during his NFL career. After retiring from football, he became a mini-star at ESPN, despite an annoying tendency to speak in absolutes and hyperbole. (Case in point, he said before Super Bowl XLI that, if Devin Hester of the Bears returns a kick for a touchdown, Chicago will win. Hester did. Chicago didn't.)
He left ESPN in early 2008, claiming that he wanted to move on to bigger and better things. Some thought that the powers-that-be in Bristol might not have been all that upset about the development.
Since then, Salisbury has generally faded into oblivion.
He'll be even more oblivious, according to the folks at Deadspin, because he has been fired from Dallas radio station 105.3 the Fan. Per Deadspin, Salisbury "freaked out a station promo girl after sexting her."

September 12, 2009 | Issue 45•37 | Onion Sports
JACKSONVILLE, FL—At a press conference Monday, Jaguars quarterback and East Carolina University alum David Garrard indicated through certain statements to reporters that "East Carolina" is one of the 50 United States. "I can say without hesitation that it is definitely my favorite of all the Carolinas," said the former ECU Pirate, who, when pressed, identified the imaginary commonwealth's capital as Greenville and its state bird as the red-necked grebe. "There's just this enormous sense of state pride over there that I felt as soon as came across the North Carolina border. And it's a progressive state, too: Did you know Obama carried East Carolina?" Garrard later told reporters that if he had to choose one state to live in, it would be between Western Kentucky and Ball State.

Alright, epic comeback time. Time to force a fumble, recover it, and return it for a double touchdown.

McNabb walked off, pumped his fist, and returned to the sidelines. The Eagles were up 38-10, so he didn't come back to the game. Didn't seem serious, but with rib injuries you never know.

Watching Tony Dungy breakdown Peyton Manning's TD pass was grade A material. Take notes ESPN.

I laugh at that. Like Jay Glazer knows what the hell is going on in Philly. Reid says he could play potentially. A week is a long time.

I cant see McNabb playing this week if the diagnosis is correct. Broken Ribs are serious business.

Had to be a missed signal or something because Wolfe didnt look like he was expecting that snap to come to him.

Julius Jones did the Natureboy strut after scoring today. I really don't like him, but now, how can I not love him?
