Well, it's either you take the chance on him beating you, or you GIVE THEM a run. Take your pick.
Yep. Gotta decide if you want to give up a run and take your chances with what follows or risk giving up more to a guy who is currently incredibly likely to get a hit and usually bring more than 1 run in. It is a decision though, take your pick is right.

It's actually amazing that Vlad's numbers in the NL vs the AL are almost identical average and OBP wise. The slugging percentage has dropped a bit, sure, but he's also getting older. Despite injury issues in a couple of years, he's hit 25+ homers every year since he was 23 and driven in 100 runs in 9 years (90+ in 10).

Mariners placed 3B Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list with an injured testicle.
Cue the laugh track. Beltre, who doesn't wear a protective cup, had a ball clip him in the groin during Wednesday's game. There was some tearing and internal bleeding. The team is waiting to see if he will require surgery. With surgery, he would be out a month. Without, roughly two weeks. Beltre's certainly been snake-bit in his free agent season. Logan Kensing was DFA'd by the Nats today. I'm sure that's Baker's fault, too.
For Kensing, this was the second time this year he has been DFA'd by the Nationals. The first time, in May, he cleared waivers, reported to Syracuse, and earned his way back to the big leagues. But since getting called up on July 20, Kensing has been hit hard almost without exception, posting an 8.16 ERA in 11 games (14-1/3 innings). After Kensing's latest outing, interim manager Jim Riggleman actually wondered aloud if the right-hander was tipping his pitches because he was getting hit so hard.

Was reading about Sandy Koufax on the interwebs and I found this cool little stat gem:
"In one of baseball's great statistical and score-keeping anomalies, this has been the only nine-inning major league game where both teams combined for one hit. The game's only run, scored by the Dodgers, was unearned.
The Dodger run was scored without a recorded at bat—Lou Johnson walked, reached second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored when the throw to get him out at third went wild."
In reference to Koufax's perfect game on 09/09/65

That just makes that old joke funnier...
It's something like "A guy tells a bunch of Dodger fans that Koufax/Drysdale has a no-hitter, and the Dodger fans reply 'Yeah, but are we winning?'"

We're seven back of the Dodgers in the loss column. It's going to be vastly difficult to catch them.
We're seven back of the Dodgers in the loss column. It's going to be vastly difficult to catch them.
You're talking about a two game difference. It's going to be vastly more difficult to catch a team that's been playing .684 baseball since june 1st than it is to catch a team that's playing like a .500 team in that same time period, and during both periods the numbers saying that those teams are playing like those records.

Wouldn't be completely against getting Penny with our need for a starters. Part of his issue is just how bad Boston's defense is. He's still wouldn't be anything particular special but 6 IP of 4.50 ERA baseball would be nice.

I just can't imagine why we wouldn't make a move for ANY of the veteran pitchers that have been available. Fish have never been hesitant in the past to make a minor move to help the team down the stretch, so wtf gives? They can't possibly think our starting pitching are good enough to overlook a vet.

Or they just didn't feel this team was capable of winning it all.
or they didn't think trading somebody for smoltz was a good idea or taking on his contract and the incentives that come with it and would rather try to get him for the minimum (which from Smoltz they nearly did).
Gotta wonder if maybe he thinks about coming here in the offseason.

Darnell McDonald scored from third base on Jesse Chavez's wild pitch with two outs in the ninth inning Monday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the sparsely attended first game of a day-night doubleheader.
McDonald singled with one out in the ninth off Chavez (0-4), who gave up a pair of hits and then bounced a pitch that skipped through catcher Jason Jaramillo. McDonald scored with a headfirst slide into the plate.
Nick Masset (5-1) got the victory with one inning in relief.
Fewer than 2,000 fans showed up for a matchup between the NL Central's bottom dwellers, played in a hushed atmosphere that better suited a tennis match. Foul balls clattered around the 42,000-seat ballpark, and the players' banter could easily be heard by the few fans in the stands.
It was the makeup of a game rained out on April 10. A lot of bad things have happened to both teams since.
The Pirates went on yet another trading spree, getting rid of most of their starters. Only Ryan Doumit and Adam LaRoche are left from the lineup that manager John Russell wrote out on that rainy April 10 night.
For the Reds, it's been all about injuries. Every Reds starter from that game has been sidelined at some point in the season -- 18 players overall have gone on the disabled list. Joey Votto was the only Reds mainstay left in the lineup from April.
The mood matched the moment.
When the game began, 11 fans were scattered in the upper-deck bleachers in left field, attended by two ushers. When Pittsburgh right-hander Daniel McCutchen -- called up before the game and given No. 62 -- threw a 92 mph fastball for his first pitch in the majors, a fan behind the Pirates dugout yelled: "There you go!"
The next pitch was gone, a homer by Drew Stubbs into the lower deck in left. Two fans gave chase as the ball bounced up the empty concrete aisle.
After the fourth inning, the video board showed one fan surrounded by empty seats and played Eric Carmen's "All By Myself," drawing a smattering of applause and laughs from the other fans who knew the feeling.
