Marlins making push for Nats 1B Johnson — 6:37 p.m.
The Marlins are making a strong push for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson, but the teams have been unable to reach an agreement on the players the Nationals would in return, according to a major league source.
The Marlins have offered the Nationals minor league pitching prospects for Johnson. Among the names under discussion: righty Ryan Tucker and Aaron Thompson.

The Marlins are making a "strong push" for Nats first baseman Nick Johnson, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The Marlins have offered minor league pitchers to the Nationals, but the sides haven't come to an agreement on which players Washington would receive. They're discussing Aaron Thompson and Ryan Tucker.

to me this is the annoynace of the trade deadline. Why wait until july 31st to aquire? Getting nick johnson on june 30th makes us better for a month longer
i mean I know it's a two way street but likewise why does a shitty team hold onto them
wanks1212

i don't disagree with that. getting another month or two out of johnson makes him much more valuable to this team (obviously)
but if he's just comgin aboard for august/september, he, b y himself, isn't the difference maker. other moves have to be made in conjunction with acquiring johnson. and since he doesn't help in 2010 or beyond, getting him at thsi point may not really be worth it if he's the only acquisition.

you wait because you don't know if you're gonna be in it. what if jj gets injured on july 1? what if we don't get hot and are still 6 games out of the WC?

you could use the same arguement for why make a trade at all
what if all that stuff happens in august? Should a team not trade in july then?
trading june 30th puts a team in so much better position than trading july 31st

UPDATED -- Marlins waiting for answer from Nats — 12:30 a.m.
The Marlins are waiting to hear if the Nationals will accept their offer for first baseman Nick Johnson, according to major-league sources.
The proposed deal would send Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker to Washington, with the Nationals paying part of the approximately $1.8 million remaining on Johnson's contract.
Jorge Cantu would move from first to third base for the Marlins. Third baseman Emilio Bonifacio would take over the injured Alfredo Amezaga's super-utility role.
The Marlins earlier made runs at Padres closer Heath Bell and even first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and Blue Jays ace right-hander Roy Halladay.
In each case, however, club officials considered the acquisition cost to be too steep, sources said.

Heath Bell Rumors: Friday
By Tim Dierkes [July 31, 2009 at 7:02am CST]
The latest on Padres closer Heath Bell, who is under team control through 2011...
Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune says that "late Thursday night, both the Angels and Marlins were still talking to the Padres regarding Bell." We learned yesterday that the Padres requested Andrew Miller or Sean West from the Marlins, and Florida declined.

The Marlins are focusing on Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson now, as they've deemed the price too high on the Padres star closer Heath Bell. The Marlins have not been ready to give up either Andrew Miller or Sean West for Bell.
It's interesting that the Marlins, winners of seven of nine, are seriously considering a rental player. Johnson's contract expires at year's end.
The Marlins also have discussed options for a fifth starter, but they seem pretty happy with Rick VandenHurk right now, so that doesn't seem like a priority.

I really think you're underestimating the impact Johnson would have on this offense. This team has a shot at the playoffs as is; add a bat like Johnson's, and those chances increase. A .400+ OBP bat in front of Hanley would simply be gold.

I'll say it:
Jeremy Hermida has more value to the Marlins if he stays on the roster. His trade value is low but his potential value to us between now and September is greater.
That and there isn't a viable replacement on the club.
/still hoping for a post 2007 ASB run
Yeah, Hermida shouldn't be dealt for crap. Trade Uggla for crap.
If that is that case, I'd say that Hermida falls into the same bag with Uggla. I think Hermida is more expendable in that perhaps some would think Maybin is the upgrade that replaces Hermida. I suppose Bonifacio would replace Uggla but I just imagine Uggla has absolutely 0 value to every team in baseball besides us.

Moving Bonifacio out of the everyday lineup improves this team dramatically. We would only be giving up a (future) bullpen arm in Tucker, and would have a spot for Logan come next year.
I see all + here.
It's a deal that does not mortgage the future while still adding a ton of value, IMO.

ESPN's Peter Gammons reports that the Marlins appear to be moving closer to a deal for Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson. Washington hasn't made a trade since its June 30 trade for Nyjer Morgan, and has told teams it's content to take draft picks for its impending free agents.
But Johnson probably wouldn't qualify for free-agent compensation because he has missed so much time with injuries. So they appear more motivated to trade Johnson this week than some of their other available players.

The Marlins could be the latest team to talk trade with the Nationals, only to come away frustrated.
The teams have been talking about a deal for first baseman Nick Johnson, but a source familiar with the negotiations said the Marlins are tiring of the slow pace of talks and "may move on."
The Nats have been active, without getting much done. Teams have shown interest in Johnson, Adam Dunn, Joe Beimel and others, but the only deal Washington has completed has been one with the Pirates, exchanging Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan for Nyjer Morgan and Sean Burnett.

The two prospects being discussed in the potential Nick Johnson trade with Florida are Ryan Tucker and Aaron Thompson. Both are former first-rounders drafted in 2005, and both are starting pitchers. It's telling about this organization's philosophy that pitchers -- despite the minor league depth at that position, and despite the dearth of prospects elsewhere -- would be the target here. It's conceivable, of course, that either of these players, if acquired, could be groomed for bullpen roles. Same goes for any other pitcher who doesn't crack the Chosen Five, as we've seen plenty of times.
Tucker is a hard thrower who'd spent most the season of the disabled list with a knee injury. He still needs to develop his secondary pitches, and though he's always been highly-ranked as a prospect, he hasn't put up good numbers in his brief time this year with Class AAA New Orleans. Tucker had a cameo at the big league level with the Marlins last year, going 2-3 with an 8.27 ERA in 13 games (six starts). Most troubling for Tucker are the walk numbers. For his minor league career, he's averaged four walks per nine innings.
Thompson was drafted straight out of high school, like Tucker. His progression hasn't been as rapid; this is his second full season in Class AA ball. His current numbers with Jacksonville, in the Southern League: 20 starts, 5-9, 4.11 ERA.

If the Nats want a 1B, what about offering Gaby instead of one of the pitchers?
I mean, they may have done this already, but it woudl seem to make sense because Gaby can, at the least, hold down the fort until the Nats acquire a real 1B. And if Gaby turns into a legit starter, then better for them.

Sources: Marlins end pursuit of Johnson — Updated 3:12 p.m.
With less than an hour to go to the non-waiver deadline, the Marlins ended their quests to land Nationals first baseman Nick Johnson and Padres closer Heath Bell, according to major-league sources.
"Dead and over," one source said of both pursuits.
The Marlins offered Class AAA right-hander Ryan Tucker and another minor leaguer for Johnson, but talks stalled when the Nationals asked for Class AA left-hander Aaron Thompson.
The price for Bell was considerably higher — a package that began with either left-hander Andrew Miller or left-hander Sean West, both of whom the Marlins expect to be part of their 2010 rotation.

The latest twitter post from Joe Frisaro, the Miami-based MLB.com writer, suggests a Johnson deal probably won't happen.

Tucker and Thompson for Johnson isn't horrible, but it's definitely sloppy seconds and I guess it would have been a reach for us.

He covets Thompson.
Which is?
I think he can be a pretty solid middle of the rotation guy
has command of all 4 pitches

Juan Rodriguez (I know, lol at the source) said this morning that Johnson would hit in the two hole.
Then again, Fredi's never been one to construct sensible lineups, so he'll probably hit 6th.
