tjfla in the Cody Ross thread:

Carl Pavano is almost 80% gonna be back with us. We are working out a deal with Cleveland with the prospect we send them depending on how much they pay on his contract.

Eh, I guess he'd be alright as a fifth starter.

Ya unless some team wants to pick up his contract and give them a prospect he has a good chance of coming back.

Our biggest problem is we want them to pick up his contract

He had some excellent starts in the first half.

/off top of my head

At the very least he is an upgrade at #5

Garbage

This also doesn't mix well with the Cody Ross rumor. To me, dealing Ross means that we're not playing for this year. However, if that's the case, then why get Pavano for the #5 spot?

Absolute garbage. Hideous garbage. He gave up like 12 homers last night to Anaheim and his ERA is in the 5's. Might as well call up Chris Seddon instead if we want to suck at 5th starter.

Better yet, trade Logan for Seddon

Ya I had been thinking the same thing. Like I said the only thing that makes sense is the team thinks we have enough hitting and need arms?

I know we want a SP tho

Considering we don't have a fifth starter and we barely have a fourth, it wouldn't be catastrophic. I'd like us to look elsewhere but Pavano has had some decent outings in the last 2 months or so.

he has really good peripherals

I'm sorry I dont get how anyone could want this guy.

He's 8-8 with a 5.66 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP

I'm okay with this as long as we only give up like some fish sticks and a large soda for him.

Because he has almost a 4 k/BB ratio, and has probably been unlucky with hits this year.

3.82 K/BB and 4.36 FIP and his home runs extremely likely go down going from AL > our park. His HR/FB right now is almost double what his HR/FB was while he was with us. Though to also be fair his KK/BB is also the higehst it's been in his career so that likely goes down aswell. But he has a .335 BABIP and a 63% LOB, those should even out to the norm

This thread is making me LOL so hard. Really.

BonifacioSuperFan#1 is advising that Pavano is garbage because his ERA is in the 5's.

Like I said, he is a better #5 option (didnt say top of the rotation guy) than we currently have.

Because everything we've gotten out of the fifth-ish starter spot has been a lot better

Miller (4.81 ERA, 1.552 WHIP)
West (4.91 ERA, 1.473 WHIP)
Sanchez (5.55 ERA, 1.766 WHIP)

I don't even want to look at the bags of crap we called up for spot starts.

U guys realize at the most he would cost us a Kevin Mattison,Brandon Todd,Greg Burns??

He is a cheap option who could start or pitch in long relief

nny

Would also set us up nicely to re-sign him I'd think

or it'd have no impact

one or the other

I'll wait for that to be the case... Better chance it's a solid arm ala Eric Basurto (who we moved for Gload)

No one wants any of the 3 listed above (I realize you were just throwing out names)

I hate that you do sports for a living and know nothing about them

Thank you for the analysis that my mother could give me

Pavano would likely be better than any other 5th starter the team would run out this year, and if he's re-signed in the offseason he fits in nicely as a #4-#5 guy who gives the team flexibility this offseason in terms of dealing someone like Volstad, West, or RVH for a corner INF/OF bat or, more likely, packaging one of them with one of hte arby guys to increase the return.

And Pavano probably wouldn't cost more than a B-/C+ spec (Aaron Thompson? Not sure I'd give up Tucker for Pavano, but I'd probably be ok with shipping off Thompson if he's just going to be a lefty reliever, which it looks like he will be.). So it's not like a Pavano deal would mean the organization would be mortgaging the future in order to win now.

Even if the team moves Cody (which would be dumb, because they can afford him on a $40 mil payroll next year, but whatever) or Hermida for prospects/Rhodes, bringing in Pavano is a solid idea, both for this year and potentially next season.

Depends on the spec we are giving up, I wouldnt be for Tucker for him (anyway we can get them to take Allison?) I doubt he has any value really though.

I guess depends on the cost but more salary they eat the higher the spec will be needed sadly.

It won't be Thompson,I would say if they are paying his salary we would be looking at sending them a Class A arm and if not would say AAA or AA arm who is older but less of a prospect They want younger pitching tho
