Two observations:
I suck at converting tables to here
After a 5-1 road trip, we now only have three teams ahead of us. We definitely have to think the team has impressed enough to warrant significant overtures at adding bats

Wild Card leaders go on the road to Citi Field (here's hoping that the Mets help us out), but St. Louis and San Francisco both have strong pitchers for them at home. Here's hoping the Brew Crew and Astros drop past the five game threshold by Friday and dump players.
Here's to hoping Josh Willingham stays hot and the Nats continue to not be the worst team ever (4-7 home trip!)

Win 40 more games and we got a good shot at winning this thing.
That's 40 wins out of 63 games = .635 Winning %
I think it can be done.
Need to avoid getting swept. One long losing streak and it becomes almost impossible to win the WC.

Man, sweeping the nats would be so huge. But I don't know if we can do it, they seem to be playing better as of late.
Fucking sucks that the phillies play the Rockies coming up. Guess you have to hope Philly sweeps them and we can take care of them on the weekend...
I don't think it sucks at all - it's a win/win for us the way I see it. If Colorado wins the series, we can potentially gain ground on the division without losing on the Wild Card if we take care of our end (2/3). If the Phillies win the series, we can gain ground on the Wild Card if we take care of business with a chance to make our own hole in the division lead over the weekend.

The men are starting to be separated from the boys now. Milwaukee and Houston have been faltering big-time, and Atlanta has now dropped two series' in a row and is currently down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh against San Diego. I also think you can pretty much stick a fork in the Mets.

The Brewers could be a scary team. If they kind find ANY kind of pitching they are gonna be interesting.. They are beating LA 6-1 at the moment. In a perfect world I would like to see the Brewers win the division and the fish win the division or wild card and hope they play eachother so i can go to the games here!

That is 33 games over the next month-plus, and only Colorado is over .500. The road trips all have built in off days.
Minimum 19-14. They need to destroy this as we then have a long run trip to St. Louis and Cincy, come home to play the Phillies, and then a week and a half later end the year with 3 games in Philly.
Phillies schedule is only 'slightly' tougher, being two tough series versus one (CHC, SF) during this stretch.

to add on lou post, the golden number to reach is 90games.
right now the marlins 58-53
so in the remaining 51 games they have to go 32-19 or 13 above .500
possible, but i think the marlins need to go on a long winning streak, like 8 straight or 9 out of ten, to have a realistic shot.
The Braves scared me, they have one of the best pitching staff in the league, and i can see them making a big run, but the marlins played better well against them this year

Considering we have gone 39-28 since we bottomed out at 19-25 (with a VERY tough schedule to boot), going 32-19 over this final stretch is very possible. I agree that Atlanta is scary, though.

Something I noticed about our schedule, figured this was as good a place as any to post it:
Month by Month
Split W L RS RA WP
April 14 8 112 105 .636
May 9 20 119 161 .310
June 17 11 131 120 .607
July 14 10 104 88 .583
August 7 5 80 73 .583
The main culprits of May's debacle being the Rays, Brewers, Cubs, Dbacks and Dodgers - none of which we play from here on out.
Have to love two .600+ months (and one at .583). Gives hope that getting to 90 wins is indeed possible.
I'd also argue that the biggest antagonist in that month was Tampa Bay - we've handled the Cubs, Dodgers, and Dbacks in subsequent series post-May (Arizona and Los Angeles on the road). It was just a crappy month overall.

They have two outstanding starters, but the rest of their rotation is very average. And I mean, they rank near or at the bottom of the league in just about every offensive category. I would think two good pitchers could only carry you so far.

You're talking about 2/5 of your rotation almost being an automatic win every turn in the rotation. That's a .400 win percentage right there. The other three are all average, yes...
But you're basically saying, can that 5 man rotation get me 3 wins a turn and with a top two like that, it's a very real possibility that one of the back three does it..
Their bullpen is also pretty cool, so the offense only has to be "good enough" and it is.

Some people dislike his show because he likes to go away from sports from time to time when people just want sports 24/7. Cowherd never says anything of value ever. He might as well be one of those posters here that just stops in and says something/nothing and gives nothing of value ever to back anything up. Except that poster has fip saying, KINGZFAN MAKES DA BEST POINTS AND HE NEVER REPEATS HIMSELF.
Also, for some reason Cowherd often appears to have the mentality that he is all time world ruler

But he said today that there is an article by Tom Verducci that he brings up every other fucking day that says that if you are 5 games under .500 on June 1 you only have like a 3% chance of making the playoffs, and if you are under .500 on that day you only have like a 12% (though I think it's more like 20% in the NL).
And he listed 13 teams that met those qualifications, two of which were the Rockies and Marlins (and like the Nats and Pirates and a bunch of shitty teams that actually don't have a chance). He said the Rockies were the only team out of those 13 that still had a chance at the playoffs.
Because he's a fucking moron who doesn't realize that the Marlins are 2 fucking games back of the fucking Rockies.

To you guys that are updating the countdown, you may want to bring the division race back into this.
With both the Rockies and the Giants winning today, we are now 5.5 games back of the wild card. With the Phillies loss, we are now 6 back of the division title.
Our best bet of going to the playoffs appears to be the division. There is only a 0.5 game difference between the two races but, while we are 5.5 games behind 2 teams that won't lose and we are done playing, we are only 6 games behind 1 team that has lost 4 in a row that we play 6 more times.
Swifty
09-08-2009, 01:24 PM
Yeah, I agree.
We aren't winning the wild card. We probably aren't winning the division either, but if we're more likely to win one, it's the division if for no other reason than the number of head to heads remaining (and even then, Philly pretty much needs to just beat us twice to end it all).

Damn Rockies and their streaking. :fist
Bright side: We're on pace for 86.1 wins.
Rockies are 20 over so they can play .500 ball for the rest of the year and still win 90 games. I think they'll do better than that. I hope this doesn't come down to 2-3 games in the standings. Boner isn't the sole reason for the team falling out of the race, but 2-3 GB at the end of the month plus three months of Erection at the top of the lineup makes that trade even worse. (I know the blame game can go futher and start implicating members of the rotation but I am considering this from a GM's standpoint. I.e: Boner's performance was expected. Ricky's and Volstad's were not.)

With three weeks left in the season, the Marlins are more focused on catching the division-leading Phillies instead of the wild-card leading Rockies. Why? They've got six games left against the Phillies and the Rockies control their own destiny.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said his team was scoreboard watching in New York Thursday night and wincing as the Phillies rallied with five runs in the ninth before falling against the Nationals.
Cody Ross said the Marlins believe their previous calls might be what ultimately puts them over the top.
"It seems like everytime this point in the year we find ourselves in the same spot and hopefully now that we have had those experiences and a couple games under our belts we can prosper this year and move forward instead of the other way," outfielder Ross said.
"We fell short the last couple years and that's not a good feeling. Nobody in here the last couple seasons after the year was over was saying that was good run, nice going. That's not what we're about. We want to go out and we want to play in October."

Cueto scratched from his start. We get Maloney, H. Bailey, Arroyo and Kip Wells. That's a murderer's row if i've ever seen one.
we'll make 'em look like Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux and a young Steve Avery

It's gonna suck if we go 12-4, get to 90, and still miss out

Colorado still has 3 against StL and 3 in LA. And we have 6 against Philly
I'm not saying I believe in our chances, but if we get to 90 (and we win the "right" 12) I think it'd be almost inconceivable for us to miss out.

Colorado would have to play subpar .500 ball, but I sure do trust in your opinion Swifty

We also have to do something we haven't done in 7 years and win this series in Cincinnati.

We just won a series against St. Louis, which is borderline impossible for our franchise as a whole

If we win 88-90 and don't make the playoffs, I'm not sure I could be upset.

Bear with me here....St. Louis goes to Colorado with something to play for and Carpenter, Wainwright and Pineiro pitching out there. It's not inconceivable that we could pick up another game or two.
Nope, it's not. But we kinda need to pick up games fast and we aint gon win all our games, so it almost dont matter that much what the Rados do

2 of 3 in the mountains for Padres. impressive.

The Braves going 8-2 over their last 10 has not helped the Marlins cause.
